    • A hybrid inflator includes a gas storage chamber filled with a pressurized gas, a chemical chamber filled with a gas generating chemical, and an initiator attached to the chemical chamber for igniting the chemical to generate a reaction gas. A gas outlet is formed to eject the pressurized gas and the reaction gas from the gas storage chamber, and a sealing plate is disposed in the gas storage chamber for separating the gas outlet from the gas storage chamber. A swirl forming device is disposed between the gas storage chamber and the chemical chamber for swirling the reaction gas from the chemical chamber and guiding the reaction gas into the gas storage chamber.

    • An inflator 10 of a vehicle occupant protection system, for example, contains an elongated housing 12 having a first end 14 and a second 16. The gas generator 10 includes a sealed pressurized gas supply or gas tank 18 in fluid communication with the first end 14 upon inflator 10 operation. A first seal 36 seals the first end 14 prior to gas generator 10 operation. A notched support member 56 is wedged within the housing 12 and fixes the first seal 36 against a sealed opening 24 of the gas tank 18, thereby preventing fluid flow during gas generator 10 inactivity. Upon gas generator 10 activation, the support member 56 is fractured by a force produced by an initiator 68 thereby releasing pressurized gas into the first end 14 and through the housing 12.

    • This inflator (1) is provided with: a housing (10) that forms a combustion space (15) filled therewithin with a gas generant (17); a front pipe that forms a front-side space to which discharge holes (19) that discharged gas generated in the combustion space (15) of the housing (10) are provided; and a filter (16) that is housed in a manner so as to partition the front-side space and the combustion space (15). The inflator (1) is further provided with a partition plate (30) that is provided between the combustion space (15) and the filter (16), with a first gas passage section and a second gas passage section formed thereon. When the pressure of the gas generated in the combustion space (15) is no greater than a set pressure, the partition plate (30) allows passage of the gas to the filter (16) side only from the first gas passage section, and when the pressure of the gas generated in the combustion space (15) exceeds the set pressure, the partition plate (30) allows passage of the gas to the filter (16) side from the first gas passage section and the second gas passage section, thus reducing the temperature of the discharged gas.

    • A gas generator for inflating a gas bag of a vehicle occupant restraint system is provided. The gas generator includes an igniting means for producing gas and/or heat upon activation by a control signal of the vehicle. The gas generator also includes a first chamber comprising a propellant ignitable by gas and/or heat produced by the igniting means, and a second chamber comprising pressurized inflation gas. An outlet opening through which the inflation gas can flow out of the second chamber and into the gas bag is provided. The gas generator also includes a sealing means sealing the outlet opening. The gas generator is configured in such a way that after activation of the igniting means gas and/or heat produced by the igniting means ignites the propellant and a pressure wave is created under the direct or indirect impact of gas produced by the igniting means.
