    • The invention relates to new cationic surfactants based on quaternary ammonium compounds corresponding to the general formulaR.sup.1 -CHOH-CHR.sup.2 -N.sup.+ R.sup.3 R.sup.4 R.sup.5 R.sup.6 CO.sub.2.sup.- (1)whereinR.sup.1 is a linear or branched alkyl residue having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms;R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a linear or branched alkyl residue having from 1 to 21 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms of the substituents R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 being in the range of from 8 to 22;R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each represent methyl, ethyl, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl;R.sup.5 represents an alkyl residue having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms or a phenalkyl residue having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms in the alkyl residue; andR.sup.6 represents a linear or branched alkyl residue having from 4 to 15 carbon atoms.The cationic surfactants have particular utility in cleaning agents.

    • A method of extracting mineral oil from subterranean formation by flooding comprising the steps of forcing an aqueous liquid into a subterranean formation containing mineral oil and displacing the mineral oil through at least one bore hole in the subterranean formation, said aqueous liquid containing from 0.01% to 15% by weight of an amphoteric surface-active compound selected from the group consisting of (1) a betaine having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are members selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, with the proviso that the sum of the carbon atoms in R.sub.1 + R.sub.2 is from 9 to 18, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are members selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl and lower alkylol, x is an integer from 2 to 4, y is an integer from 0 to 1 and z is an integer from 1 to 4, and (2) mixtures of said betaine with up to 20% by weight of an acid having the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, x and z have the above-assigned values.

    • A process for the production of triglycerides of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl esters of C.sub.6 -C.sub.22 fatty acids:a) where dry sodium carbonate catalyst is dissolved in glycerol and mixed with a molar excess of preferably the methyl ester of C.sub.6 -C.sub.22 fatty acid at a temperature between about 150.degree. C. and 250.degree. C. at less than atmospheric pressure and under substantially anhydrous conditions to produce an initial reaction mixture containing the corresponding triglycerides of said fatty acids, and partially reacted glycerol with unreacted hydroxyl groups (OH values 10-40),b) thereafter, a portion of the initial reaction mixture is reacted with additional C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl ester of C.sub.6 -C.sub.22 fatty acid under conditions to achieve substantially full conversion of said unreacted hydroxyl groups (OH values of 5 or less), andc) a product containing the corresponding triglycerides of said fatty acids is separated from unreacted alkyl ester and from the sodium carbonate catalyst. Improved light colored triglyceride products are achieved and can be separated readily from the sodium carbonate catalyst by filtration.
