    • A torque transfer system is provided for transferring torque from an input element such as a flywheel of an internal combustion engine to an output element such as a PTO shaft. The torque transfer system includes the input and output elements and a drive system comprising a drive ring attached to the input element and a drive plate positively or non-positively coupled to the output element. The drive ring transfers torque to the drive plate so as to absorb torsional vibrations which occur during operation of the system, so as to resist abrasion of the drive ring from the drive plate, and so as to resist failure from rotational shock loads imposed on the drive ring by the drive plate. To this end, the drive ring is formed with resilient teeth which, though overlying metal support lugs imparting sufficient rigidity to the teeth to transfer torque to the drive plate, provide the sole contact surface between the drive ring and the drive plate and thus assuredly provide the desired damping and wear resistance under all operating conditions. The resilient teeth and the mating teeth on the drive plate preferably take the form of oversized lugs which are resistant to failure from rotational shock loads.

    • A synchronized clutch for coupling a driven element to a drive element includes an externally activated nonpositive coupling, and a positive coupling which engages automatically when the driven element achieves a designated operational state. The nonpositive coupling, preferably comprising at least one friction element permitting some slippage between the drive and driven elements, accelerates the driven element to a velocity which at least approaches synchronization of the drive and driven elements. The positive coupling preferably comprises a sliding drive ring which is responsive to centrifugal weights to positively couple the drive and driven elements at a designated velocity. The external forces actuating the nonpositive coupling are preferably applied manually through a lever. Provision is preferably made for the automatic disengagement of the clutch when the velocity of the driven element decreases below a designated velocity.

    • A marine vessel propulsion system includes one or more drive systems, each including an engine, an engine throttle, and a shiftable transmission. A control system for each drive system comprises a manually operable control lever assembly for electrically operating a servo assembly which mechanically operates the engine throttle and the transmission shifting clutches. The control lever assembly comprises a one-piece plastic support base which is adapted to pivotally support one or two identical one-piece plastic control levers. Components associated with a control lever are interchangeable and identical and include a potentiometer mechanically interconnected between the control lever and the base, a detent plate and a detent arm. The control lever assembly also comprises based-mounted components including a station selector switch, a mode selector switch, an electrical connector and a flexible circuit board for electrically connecting the potentiometer selector switches and electrical connector. The servo assembly comprises a plastic housing containing two identical servo units for mechanically operating the engine throttle and the transmission shifting clutches. Each servo unit comprises a support frame on which are mounted a reversible electric motor having a rotatable motor shaft, a rotatable link-drive shaft and a solenoid-operated clutch for connecting and disconnecting the motor shaft and the link-drive shaft. A potentiometer mechanically connected to the link-drive shaft is restrained from rotation by a clamp engaged with the motor housing.

    • A power transmission for tractors or the like and having change speed gear mechanism and also having a power take-off shaft for driving auxiliary equipment. A hydraulically actuated clutch is utilized in the transmission for selectively engaging various gear ratios. A hydraulically actuated brake is provided for disconnecting the drive shafts and locking the power take-off to the transmission housing. Operating control valve means are provided for controlling the power take-off brake and a hydraulic detent is provided for the valve. The power take-off shaft is controlled by a modulatable clutch of the duplex type which enables the operator to modulate the speed of the power take-off shift and automatically insures that the power take-off shaft is locked and the power take-off brake is disengaged. The control valve for the power take-off brake includes a hydraulic detent that can lock the operator shifted control valve in the clutch operative position.

    • A power transmission system for swinging the upper section of a mobile crane in opposite directions comprises a prime mover, a torque converter, a modulatable torque converter clutch connected between the prime mover and the torque converter, and a transmission connected to be driven by the torque converter and including a pair of alternately actuatable modulatable transmission clutches therein. The torque converter clutch is modulatable between disengaged and engaged positions. Each transmission clutch is modulatable between a minimum engaged position and a fully engaged position. Selectively operable control means are provided for modulating the torque converter clutch and a selected one of the transmission clutches to swing the crane upper in a desired direction. The control means effect full engagement of the selected transmission clutch prior to full engagement of the torque converter clutch. The control means further include means for sensing torque converter output speed (transmission input speed) and for governing modulation of the torque converter clutch accordingly.

    • A torque converter comprises a stationary housing within which a rotatable impeller is mounted for driving a rotatable turbine. The bladed impeller is mounted on an engine driven input shaft, and the bladed turbine is mounted on an output shaft on the same axis as the input shaft. The impeller blades and turbine blades move through an annular oil-filled passage. A plurality of stator blades are disposed in the passage in spaced-apart radial arrangement around the axis of the shafts. Eah stator blade is divided into two sections, namely, a fixed forward section and an adjustably movable or pivotable rear section. Means are provided to pivot the rear sections of all of the stator blades simultaneously so as to vary the width of the flow channel between each pair of adjacent stator blades between fully opened and fully closed positions and any position therebetween to thereby control the amount of oil available for use by the impeller and turbine and thereby enable regulation of the power output of the torque converter. The movable rear section of each stator blade is provided with a stem which extends through a sealed opening in the stationary housing and enables pivotal adjustment of the rear section of the stator blade about the axis of the stem. The stem axes are parallel to the shaft axes. Each stem is provided on the end thereof exteriorly of the housing with a rigidly attached small gear which meshes with a large ring gear exteriorly of the housing. Actuator means are provided exteriorly of the housing to adjustably rotate the ring gear in opposite directions to effect simultaneous adjusting movement of the rear section of all stator blades. The actuator means comprise a manually operable power assisted actuator and a power assist assembly.

    • A self-adjusting mechanism compensates for wear of over-center clutches and the like and is adapted to mechanically sense clutch wear or slack when the clutch is engaged and to compensate for such wear or slack upon disengagement of the clutch. The self-adjusting mechanism preferably comprises a relatively durable and simple ratchet mechanism including teeth mounted on the adjusting ring and a pawl mounted on the clutch face plate. The pawl retracts upon clutch engagement by an amount determined by the thickness of the gap between the adjusting ring and the face plate which is in turn dependent at least in part on clutch wear, and advances upon clutch disengagement by an equal amount. Slack adjustment takes place when the pawl engages a new tooth upon retraction and then advances upon clutch disengagement to drive the tooth and thus the adjusting ring to rotate on the hub. The maximum stroke of the pawl, and thus the minimum adjusted gap between the adjusting ring and the face plate and the maximum torque transmitting capacity of the clutch, can be set by varying the effective length of the lever assembly supporting the pawl.

    • An electronic control for the automatic transmission of a motor vehicle receives input signal in digital, analog, and pulsed form from signal generating devices responsive to operating conditions in the apparatus, processes them in accordance with a stored program and provides output signals to operate various tranducers. A CPU (central processing unit) board protects against data loss in low/off power conditions. An input signal board employs high-speed logic circuits for measuring time length between leading edges of pulsed input signals to ascertain magnitude and rate of change of the rotational speed of certain components and actuates clutch solenoids accordingly. An output signal board embodies improved transducer-drive circuits for the clutch solenoids.
