    • A diaphragm fluid flow control assembly serving to provide a leak-proof seal for fluid-containing structures and serving to provide a leak-proof seal while fluid is extracted from the structures via a blunt tipped tube or needle. A perforation in the diaphragm is sealed closed by compressive forces within the diaphragm prior to insertion of a needle through the diaphragm into a fluid containing structure such as an intravenous bag, a syringe or medicament bottle. The diaphragm is also sealed after removal of the blunt tipped needle from the diaphragm. While the blunt tipped needle is inserted through the diaphragm and fluid is extracted from a fluid-containing structure, the diaphragm is in sealing engagement with the external surface of the inserted needle thereby allowing fluid to be removed from the container through the needle and preserving the sterility of the fluid. The assembly serves as a sterilization preserving transmission valve and cap for fluids stored in containers commonly used in the medical and health care field.

    • A closed system, needleless valve device includes a generally tubular body defining an internal cavity. On the proximal end of the body there is an opening which is preferably sufficiently large to receive an ANSI standard tip of a medical implement. The distal end of the body has a generally tubular skirt. The valve also includes a hollow spike having a closed tip. The spike includes at least one longitudinal 18-gauge hole located distal the tip, and is seated inside the cavity such that the tip is below the proximal end of the body. An annular support cuff is connected to the spike which seals off a portion of the cavity of the body such that an upper cavity containing the tip is defined. The valve also includes a plastic, resilient silicone seal which fills the upper cavity and opening and covers the tip of the spike so as to present a flush surface. An adaptor enables the valve to be attached to a resealable container. The valve is created by placing the spike with the seal thereon within the body. The spike and seal are preferably prevented from being removed from the body by at least one retaining tab that is created during assembly of the valve by gouging material from an inner surface of the body with a gouging bit as the valve is assembled.

    • A medication delivery and monitoring system and methods whereby drugs are safely delivered to a patient, monitored in real-time during delivery and crucial events are recorded during delivery to provide real-time, on-line information and detail for an audit trail. A novel safety label cradle unit is disclosed. Safety label cradles (SLC's) are provided in a plurality of sizes to match varying sizes of syringes which are disposed on a cradle of the SLC to provide a constant needle height on the SLC unit independent of syringe volume (barrel diameter). A selected SLC is securely affixed to a syringe by an adhesively backed label wrapping. The label is preprinted to provide drug identification indicia and drug preparation information. The information is automatically read into the system from the label. A novel delivery station of the system monitors drug delivery as a plunger of the syringe is pushed to deliver a drug to a patient. A smart tray in cooperation with a slider portion of the SLC is used to selectively deliver drugs to a port in the IV set. The smart tray comprises a first portion for carrying SLC units, an attachable second portion having a control panel for operating the system and a cover for lockably affixing the SLC units to the tray.

    • A method of delivering blood to an evacuated receptacle having a pierceable stopper and a cavity at a subatmospheric pressure, comprising the steps of:a) providing a syringe comprising a barrel having an open proximal end, a distal end and a chamber, a needle cannula having a sharp distal end and a lumen therethrough connected to the distal end, a shield having an open distal end slidably mounted over the barrel for telescoping movement from a proximal position where the needle cannula projects through the open distal end of the shield to a distal position where the shield surround the needle cannula, a piston inside the barrel;b) providing a catheter having a distal end and a passageway therethrough and a housing having a port in fluid communication with the passageway, a pierceable septum sealing the port;c) placing the distal end of the catheter in a blood vessel;d) piercing the pierceable septum with the needle and drawing blood from the vessel through the catheter, and into the chamber by manipulating the piston;e) withdrawing the needle from the vessel;f) moving the shield to the distal position;g) inserting an evacuated receptacle into the shield until the sharp distal end of the needle cannula pierces the stopper and enters the cavity; andh) allowing blood to flow form the syringe chamber through the lumen into the cavity of the receptacle.

    • A needle connector assembly for attachment to an IV receptacle which includes a needle hub with a cannula or needle attached thereto and a housing to which the needle hub is mounted. The hub has a plurality of equi-spaced splines thereon and the housing has an aperture in the rear portion thereof defining a plurality of equi-spaced slots therein which mate with the splines when the hub and the housing are secured together. Along the length of the interchangeable splines and slots, an inwardly projecting, one-way barb is provided which has an inclined or cam surface at its leading edge. When the hub is inserted into the housing, the needle is completely surrounded by the housing and the barbs bite into the adjacent material to preclude withdrawal of the hub from the housing. The housing and the receptacle may interlock with each other at a patient IV site to secure the housing to the receptacle.
