    • A short-circuiting member for preventing a commutator from being elongated in the axial direction without increasing the types of different components. The short-circuiting member includes components, each having outer and inner circumferences. Each component includes outer circumference terminals arranged along the outer circumference, inner circumference terminals arranged along the inner circumference, and connection portions connecting a corresponding one of the outer circumference terminals and a corresponding one of the inner circumference terminals that are separated from each other by a predetermined angle in a circumferential direction. The outer and inner circumference terminals are substantially formed along the same plane. The components are laminated in a state in which the connection portions of one of the components are reversed to the connection portions of another one of the components. The outer circumference terminals that are adjacent in a lamination direction are in contact with each other, the inner circumference terminals that are adjacent in the lamination direction are in contact with each other, and the connection portions that are adjacent in the lamination direction are not in contact with each other.

    • An electric motor includes a cylindrical yoke main body and a plurality of permanent magnets having an arcuate cross-section. The permanent magnets are secured to a inner circumferential surface of the yoke main body such that the permanent magnets are continuous with one another along the entire circumference of the yoke main body, thereby forming a ring. An even number of magnetic poles are formed in the permanent magnets at predetermined angular intervals along the circumferential direction of the yoke main body. A pair of the magnetic poles that are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction of the yoke main body have different magnetic polarities from each other. At least one of the permanent magnets is provided with a section where the magnetic polarity changes in the circumferential direction of the yoke main body. This suppresses vibration excited in a stator that causes vibration and noise.

    • A range finder includes an improved module structure, that facilitates injecting a transparent filler uniformly into the entire light guide spaces neither leaving any unfilled region nor impairing the characteristics thereof. A channel of flow (or U-groove) is formed across a partition wall, connecting light guide spaces arranged side by side. This feature allows smooth flow of transparent filler into the range finder module without an unfilled region and consequently no overflow of the transparent filler onto outer wall of the plastic module and onto terminal portion of the lead frame. Another feature of this invention is the presence of shield walls along the channel of flow protruding from the side walls of the channel of flow in an inter-digitated fashion, to prevent the stray light from one light guide space entering the other light guide space through the channel of flow.

    • A liquid crystal cell which minimizes disordered orientation occurring with temperature changes even across a wide range, to exhibit good contrast and high reliability, as well as a smectic liquid crystal composition for use the liquid crystal cell are provided. In smectic liquid crystal compositions having a layer construction in the liquid crystal molecular arrangement, it was found that antiferroelectric liquid crystal compositions resistant to variation in the layer spacing of the smectic phase due to temperature changes are resistant to disordered orientation. Specifically, if the antiferroelectric liquid crystal composition contains at lest 45 wt % of an antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound with roughly constant layer spacing in a temperature range from the temperature t.sub.1 which gives the minimum value for the layer spacing of the smectic C.sub.A * phase to -20.degree. C., no disordered liquid crystal orientation results even after cold/hot temperature cycles. An even greater effect is achieved if the spontaneous polarization at of the composition at temperature t.sub.1 is at least 160 nC/cm.sup.2.
