    • A rotating electromagnetic machine has a tubular axle with mounting rings, a common ring, a coil input ring, and at least one bearing set mounted on it. A fitting is secured at a distal end of the tubular axle, and a commutator is secured at the proximal end. A housing is mounted on the bearing sets through adaptors. Connecting bars extend axially within the axle with lateral rods joined to the connecting bars at their distal ends, the bars commuting between segments of the commutator electromagnetic coils. A plurality of the electromagnetic coils are secured to the coil input ring. The coils are formed of spiral turns of a single flat strip electrically conductive material. A plurality of peripheral and sector magnets are mounted adjacent to the electromagnetic coils with electromagnetic interaction when relative motion occurs between the coils and the magnets.

    • A universal motor (18) for a power tool (10) has a stator assembly (22) and an armature (24). The stator assembly includes a plurality of interconnected field windings (28-34) to which current is supplied to run the motor. The armature has a commutator (36) including brushes (40a, 40b) for circulating current through the armature. To quickly and safely brake the motor, without excessively damaging the brushes, a switch (16) is interposed between an AC power source for the motor and the armature. In one embodiment, the switch shorts the armature during braking. In this embodiment, the switch includes sets (56, 58, 60) of electrical contacts by which the inner field windings (28, 30) are connected in series with the outer filed windings (32, 34); and the field windings are series connected with the armature. When the motor is braked, the switch is moved to a position opening the electrical connection between the power source and the outer field winding, while maintaining the electrical connection with the inner field windings. The switch includes electrical contacts across which the armature is connected when the motor is braked. The armature is shorted across these electrical contacts to help brake the motor.

    • A drive circuit for a DC motor provided with an armature having an armature winding and a plurality of field poles. The field poles are each composed of a main pole excited by a field winding and an auxiliary pole formed with a permanent magnet of the same polarity as the main pole. An armature current is shunted to supply a field current to the field winding connected in series to the armature. The field current remains zero until the armature current reaches a predetermined value, and increases with an increase in the armature current after the latter exceeds the predetermined value. As a result of this, in the region in which the armature current is small, that is, in the high-speed region of the motor, a torque larger than that of a DC series motor is obtained, and in the region in which the armature current is large, that is, in the low-speed region of the motor, a torque larger than that of a permanent magnet type DC motor is provided.
