    • A tie layer insert is disclosed to aid in bond formation between an expandable balloon and a distal portion of a catheter shaft. The tie layer insert can be a single layer applied directly to the structural surfaces, or alternatively, the tie layer may be incorporated into a preformed polymeric insert. In the latter embodiment, the polymeric insert may include several layers of polymeric material. During the manufacturing process, the preformed polymeric insert is positioned between the distal portion of the expandable balloon and the catheter shaft. The entire distal region is then processed to form a sealably bonded expandable balloon to the distal end of the catheter shaft.

    • A processing technique and a composition which allow compositions of PBT polymers or copolymers to be formed into blow molded articles, especially medical balloons such as dilatation or stent placement balloons, from extruded tubular parisons. The process includes a longitudinal stretch step run at a temperature below the Tg of the polymeric material and a radial expansion step run at a temperature above the Tg of the polymeric material. During the longitudinal stretch step, the tubing is subjected to high internal pressure. In the composition a small amount of boric acid is added to the polybutylene terephthalate in a melt blend to give a formulation which has reduced crystallinity after extrusion and which can more readily fashioned into high strength blow molded articles than PBT by itself. Articles, which may be formed using the invention include medical device balloon articles in which the polymer consists essentially of PBT optionally blended with boric acid.

    • The present invention relates generally to elongate support members, preferably for use with a catheter for performing medical procedures including percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. An elongate support member comprising a proximal end and a distal end is disclosed. The proximal end of the elongate support member is formed to define a plurality of flanges. A linkage connects the flanges, and a lumen within the shaft is defined by connecting the flanges. The elongate support member comprises an improved catheter shaft design that maintains pushability, flexibility, and torquability while limiting kinking.
