    • A modular optical router/switch construction system and method are described. In one aspect of the present invention, the modules provided are basic 1×N optical components and/or pass-through 1×N optical components, both of which have input/output (I/O) ports which are capable of detachably interconnecting. Pass-through 1×N optical components are like the basic 1×N optical components but include extra ports so that input light may “pass through” the component. In another aspect of the present invention, a bi-directional optical component capable of modular construction is provided. The bi-directional optical component has the same I/O ports as the basic 1×N optical component, but the bi-directional I/O ports are built to engage a duplex optical link (i.e., a link comprised of two optical fibers with signals going in two opposite directions).

    • A method and apparatus for monitoring MEMS-based optical switches and cross-connects. A plurality of partial reflectors are introduced into optical paths of the switch for reflecting light transmitted along the optical paths through a transparent substrate of the switch, without disturbing transmission of the light along the optical paths. The reflected light is transmitted through the substrate, which is preferably made of silicon and transparent to wavelengths of light used in DWDM systems. A photodetector array bonded to the underside of the substrate detects the light reflected by the plurality of partial reflectors through the substrate. The light detected by the photodetector array indicates the switching states and functionality of the switch, and can be processed by circuitry associated with the array.

    • A highly reliable optical communications equipment is offered, which can control light more accurately than heretofore (i.e., less restrictions are imposed on the amount of attenuation and on the resolution) and which is equipped with a latching function. The optical communications equipment includes a piezoelectric actuator, a moving body moved by the piezoelectric actuator as a drive source, a multi-coating filter for controlling light that is a signal medium by movement of the moving body, a drive circuit for controlling the position of the multi-coating filter via the actuator, and a control circuit. The piezoelectric actuator uses bending vibrations produced in a piezoelectric vibrating body as a power source. If the moving body is not moved for a given time, the control circuit sends a function keeping signal to drive the actuator to such an extent that the moving body does not move. Thus, the function of the actuator is maintained.

    • An apparatus for selectively coupling fiber optic lines comprises an optical input selection device, an optical output selection device, and a rotatable coupling mechanism interconnecting the optical input selection device and the optical output selection device. Rotation of the coupling mechanism causes rotation of the first output end and the second input end.
