    • A cooled gas turbine power plant has a compressor and a high pressure turbine connected to the compressor. The cooling air quantity for the turbine is controlled in response to instantaneous load conditions and in direct response to the cooling air quantity control of the compressor. This control of the cooling air quantity for the turbine is achieved by a direct mechanical coupling of a slide valve for the turbine cooling air control with the control of the compressor, whereby good power output values and low fuel consumption values are achieved for the high pressure turbine, especially under partial load operating conditions. The compressor may be controlled by an adjustment of the angular position of its guide vanes or blades or by an adjustment of the quantity of its discharge air.

    • Disclosed is an actuator for rotating a plurality of circumferentially spaced variable vanes each having a spindle extending through a casing about which the vane is rotatable. The actuator includes an arcuate unison member and a plurality of levers each having first and second ends, respective ones of the levers being fixedly attached to a vane spindle at the lever first end and rotatably attached to the unison member at the lever second end. Frangible means are provided for allowing at least one of the vanes to be rotated to an angular position different from the position of adjacent ones of the vanes upon impact of the one vane by a foreign object, and limit means are provided for maintaining the angular position of the one vane within predetermined limits with respect to the angular position of adjacent vanes to prevent 1/REV excitation.

    • A gun-launched ramjet projectile follows a classical vacuum ballistic trajectory by maintaining a thrust-drag balance. The thrust of the ramjet is varied by an air door which bleeds air from the duct that leads from the supersonic diffuser at the front of the projectile to the combustion chamber. The control system for the air door includes an actuator and a pair of accelerometers, the output of which is integrated to provide an indication of velocity. The first accelerometer operates during the launching of the projectile in the gun to measure the launch velocity. A second, and more sensitive, accelerometer measures in-flight velocity changes due to atmospheric conditions. Both of the measured velocities are compared with prerecorded standards and error signals are derived representing any velocity deviations. These error signals are combined and then used to drive the air doors which varies the thrust of the ramjet so that it follows the classical vacuum ballistic trajectory.

    • In a combined cycle power plant having one or more combustion turbines and a steam turbine, a dry catalytic NOx removal module is disposed in each of the turbine exhaust stacks. A waste heat exchanger system includes an economizer coil and a pair of high pressure evaporator coils on upstream and downstream sides of the NOx removal module to generate steam for injection into the turbine combustors and for delivery to a superheater coil upstream from the upstream evaporator coil. A bypass stack across the upstream evaporator coil is damper controlled to regulate the exhaust gas temperature at the entry to the NOx removal module. A downstream low pressure evaporator coil generates steam for induction into the low pressure section of the steam turbine. Superheated steam is supplied to the high pressure section of the steam turbine. The compressor inlet guide vanes are closed to increase exhaust gas temperature as required after the upstream evaporator bypass flow reaches zero and no longer controls gas temperature. If the inlet guide vanes reach the fully closed position, reductant injection flow is shut off to terminate the NOx removal process under low exhaust gas temperature conditions. A plant afterburner is operated to add heat to the exhaust gas if gas temperature is too low.

    • An air intake control for an air utilizing jet aircraft engine. The control is provided with fixed and movable air intake control ramps and the positioning of such movable ramps for air control purposes is determined by the static pressure above one thereof modified by the static pressure of the external air flow, the total pressure and the angle of attack of the aircraft. One control parameter is produced by a device responsive to the relationship between the static pressure above the one movable ramp and the total pressure of the external air flow. Particularly, this pressure relationship is calculated as a function of the operating cylinder feedback signal indicating the actual position of the center ramp, and is applied as a modifying value to a summing junction provided in the control circuit to produce a variable demand signal. The variable demand signal so generated is then compared with a signal representing a corresponding actual pressure relationship and the error signal, if any, so generated effects a corrective movement of the movable ramps until the error signal becomes zero.

    • A control vane arrangement for a turbine has an even number of vanes in a duct or chamber surrounding the turbine rotor. Alternate vanes are movable in either direction from positions in which they are transverse to the direction of fluid flow, and the remaining vanes are movable in either direction from positions in which they are substantially aligned with the direction of gas flow. All the vanes move simultaneously and when one set of vanes is transverse the other set is substantially aligned. Fluid flow to the turbine rotor can be controlled so as to reverse the direction of rotation of the turbine, fluid flow being effectively shut off before the rotor direction is reversed.
