    • An engine which employs a cam follower mechanism to reduce wear and reduce the size of an assembled engine. The cam follower mechanism utilizes guide rails located to reduce side thrust on the valve stem. The engine employs a high speed quill shaft to synchronize independent cam shafts existing in each of a plurality of interconnected engines. The engine is assembled using a single size fastener to provide a uniform stress gradient within the engine. The engines are interconnected utilizing O-ring seals. The engine provides a piston crown utilizing a connecting rod directly connected to the bottom surface of the piston crown. The piston crown is stabilized along the longitudinal cylinder axis by a rail guide. Connecting rods are provided which require less than one hundred eighty degrees (180.degree.) circumference of a crankshaft pin for support so that a plurality of connecting rods can be associated with a single crankshaft pin. A tabbed bearing fits under the plurality of connecting rods to provide lubrication between the connecting rods and the crankshaft pin. Connecting rods are held to the crankshaft pin by a circular retaining ring. The engine provides a separate cylinder head and cylinder which are attached via a circular deformable retaining band to form a metal to metal seal. The engine provides an independent lubrication system in each engine. Coolant or lubricant is provided to each engine in parallel so that the temperature of the coolant entering each engine is the same. A large diameter modular crankshaft is provided.

    • A system for measuring the efficiency of a motor vehicle catalytic converter through which gas flow passes. Two sensors monitor the gas conditions upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter and provide output signals to a microprocessor having dual input channels. The sensors may be lambda sensors. Each input channel leads to integration paths which receive the output from the sensors and calculate a variable average. The variable average is sent sequentially to a difference calculating node, a squaring node, and an integration module. The integration module sums intermediate signals over a period of time and generates output signals. The output signals are compared to each other and to reference values to determine if the catalytic converter is operating efficiently. A method of determining the efficiency of the catalytic converter using the aforementioned system is also provided.

    • Disclosed is an improvement of electromagnetic type fuel injection valve comprising: a cylindrical housing having a stationary core therein; an annular yoke positioned in the vicinity of the opening end of the housing; a coil positioned in the space defined by the housing, the stationary core and the yoke; a valve seat piece having a needle valve put therein, the valve seat piece being positioned ahead of the yoke, and comprising a valve seat and a fuel metering-and-injecting aperture consecutive to the valve seat to be opened and closed by the front end of the needle valve; and a movable plunger integrally connected to the rear end of the needle valve, opposing the end of the stationary core. The fuel injection valve is designed according to the present invention so that the flow rate at which the fuel is injected from the fuel injection valve when fully opened is 20 L/H with the fuel metering-and-injecting aperture having a maximum effective injection area of 0.3 mm.sup.2, and that the product of L.times.D ranges from 1.8 cm.sup.3 to 3.6 cm.sup.3, where L stands for the longitudinal length of the magnetic path formed by the housing and the yoke, and D stands for the diameter crossing the longitudinal length L.

    • The present invention relates to a high compression ratio internal-combustion engine including a control valve which opens and closes a connection hole, between a pre-chamber and a main chamber, which pre-burns fuel and main chamber. The engine controls the fuel injection and the opening and closing of the control valve according to the rotation of the crank shaft and engine load. The connection hole is opened during the exhaust step or at the last period of compression stroke near top dead center and compressed hot air is forced into t he pre-chamber. The fuel is then mixed and burned by the hot air, but the fuel air mixture in the pre-chamber is so rich that the generation of NOX is controlled. Afterwards, the non-burned fuel and flame generated in pre-chamber is ejected to the main chamber, and fuel and hot air in the main chamber react. The engine of the present invention allows smooth engine operation even at a high compression ratio.
