    • The degree to which a rotating object like a machine tool spindle undesirably wobbles in directions both transverse and parallel to its axis of rotation is measured preferably by providing a laser beam or other beam energy source which directs the beam toward a beam reflecting surface, most advantageously a curved surface, like a spherical or cylindrical surface. The reflecting surface is most advantageously formed by a spherical body mounted for adjustment in a plane perpendicular to the rotating axis involved, so that the center of the curved surface can be positioned as close as possible to the axis involved before error measurements are taken. In such case, the distance the beam traverses between the beam source and the point on the curved surface struck by the beam is a measure of the degree to which the spindle undesirably wobbles in directions both transverse to and parallel to the spindle axis. The beam source and the beam traverse distance measuring means can be a commercially available laser head which by use of focussing means, if needed, returns the reflected beam to the laser head which is designed to produce beam traverse distance measurement data.

    • A momentum-decoupled drive train for a machine, includes a servo motor, a first drive element and a second drive element. The second drive element is movably supported relative to a machine bed in a movement direction of a machine carriage. Reaction forces which are caused by the movement of the machine carriage, are compensated by a corresponding counter movement of the second drive element or a reaction carriage connected thereto, and hence are not transferred to the machine bed. The position of the machine carriage relative to the machine bed is controlled by correcting the position setpoint value with actual position and velocity data for the reaction carriage relative to the machine bed.

    • The present invention is a retrofit apparatus for attachment to vertical milling machines. The invention generally comprises a main scale, a digital indicator, a mounting cover having a centrally located aperture for receiving the indicator and allowing vertical movement thereof, a plurality of hat clips and screws to attach the scale and indicator to the mounting cover, a rear mounting plate, a quill stop bar, a quill mount, and a rod. In operation, as the quill device of a milling machine is moved, the indicator slides up and down within the aperture and the indicator effectively and precisely measures the vertical displacement thereof. In an alterative embodiment of the invention, the retrofit apparatus comprises an aperture in the mounting cover wherein the aperture is substantially the same size as the indicator, and in operation only the scale moves while the indicator measures the vertical displacement of the quill.
