摘要： Method and apparatus for spreading webs of spreadable materials is disclosed. A web of such material is advanced into contact with the convex periphery of a plurality of curved rolls to effect successive incremental lateral spreading of the web material on each curved roll, the curved rolls being spacedly disposed about a fixed axis and rotatably supported between aligned mounting centers disposed on axes extending parallel to the fixed axis. While the web is advanced in an open loop travel course around and in contact with the convex peripheries of the curved rolls, the curved rolls are concurrently unitarily orbited about said fixed axis in a path counter to the advance course of the tow and at an orbiting speed such that a given point on the web contacts the convex peripheries of the curved rolls a plurality of times in excess of the plural number of curved rolls disposed about the fixed axis.

The method of treating an elongated web of fibrous material to render the same particularly adapted to be gathered transversely and enclosed in a wrapper to make a filter cord subdividable into filler rods and filter plugs for cigarettes, the steps comprising: advancing an essentially in elastic web of the material through the bight between a pair of meshing rotating rolls provided with narrow longitudinal grooves parallel to the axes of the rolls alternating with narrow longitudinal ribs parallel to the axes of the rolls which engage the web and prevent appreciable longitudinal contraction thereof so that the web is stretched longitudinally to loosen and expose fibers in a plurality of closely-spaced successive narrow areas disposed transversely on the web without substantial impairment of the longitudinal continuity of the web; and advancing the longitudinally stretched web through the bight between a pair of non-contacting meshing rotating rolls provided with narrow circumferential grooves alternating with narrow circumferential ribs which engage the web and prevent appreciable lateral contraction thereof to groove the web in a direction parallel to its travel and stretched transversely of the grooves to loosen and exposure fibers in a plurality of closely-spaced narrow longitudinal areas without substantial impairment of the transverse continuity of the web.

摘要： Apparatus and process for treating paper strip material to render it particularly adapted to be gathered and enclosed in a wrapper to make a filter cord subdividable into efficient cigarette filters. The paper is first moistened to prevent undue tearing in a longitudinal grooving and lateral stretching treatment which loosens and exposes fibers by passage through the nip between heated meshing rollers of rigid material having alternating circumferential grooves and ridges. After being grooved and stretched the paper is dried to set the grooves, and optionally flattened somewhat by a knurling operation. The grooving and stretching may be carried out by successive sets of rollers wherein the following sets may be operated at a higher peripheral speed to stretch the paper longitudinally.
