    • The lock comprises a lock bolt, in particular a latch bolt (17), the actuating mechanism of which can be locked by means of a locking mechanism which comprises one series of pushbuttons (25) on each side of the lock. The pushbuttons (25) act on code and blocking tumbler members so that when the correct number combination is put in, one of the two check slides (39) is released. A selector (59) couples the two check slides (39) to the lock bolt actuating mechanism so that, when one of the two check slides is released, the lock bolt (17) can be moved to its unlocking position. The lock can thus be unlocked from either side of the lock and, due to the two locking mechanisms, a different number combination can be set for the two sides. The tumbler members each preferably comprise a first tumbler element, consisting of a base element and a code element screwed onto the base element, and a second tumbler arranged in the check slide and biased by means of a spring against the code element. With such tumbler members, it is easier to modify the number combination.

    • Various enhancements are provided to a pushbutton lock to enhance its security. One is the provision of button tips that are mounted on the ends of the button assemblies and spring-loaded to protrude from the face of the lock, regardless of whether the underlying button is "in" or "out." By this arrangement, a bystander cannot readily see the button combination by the pattern of depressed buttons. This arrangement also reduces tactile feedback between the underlying button assembly and the externally available button tips, increasing resistance to pick attacks. A further enhancement is the provision of button bars between adjacent pairs of button tips. Whenever any of the button tips is manually depressed, the corresponding button bar is pressed into engagement with, and prevents movement of, a member that must be moved in order to unlock the lock. This arrangement further increases lock security by preventing an attacker from experimentally pressing buttons and judging the tactile effect thereon in attempted unlockings of the lock.

    • A combination lock or padlock having pushbuttons where the combination of buttons to be pushed to open the lock is mechanically programmable by the user is disclosed. The lock has a case and a locking arm and associated slider, moveable between a locked and unlocked position. A plurality of buttons project from at least one side of the case, and are owner-reversible between two orientations and moveable through holes in the case between first and second positions. In one orientation, movement of the locking means is barred in the first position and permitted in the second position, and in the other orientation movement is permitted in the first position and barred in the second position. The orientation of any button is not being visually ascertainable from outside the case, so the lock owner can program the combination of the lock by selecting the orientation of the respective buttons.
