    • A process for expanding tobacco is provided which employs liquid carbon dioxide as the expansion agent. Tobacco is contacted with liquid carbon dioxide to thoroughly impregnate the tobacco with the liquid carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide impregnated tobacco is maintained at a temperature no lower than -2.degree. C. and under conditions of temperature and elevated pressure such that all or substantially all of the carbon dioxide which is in contact with the tobacco is in liquid form. After the impregnation has been completed, any excess liquid carbon dioxide which may be present with the tobacco may be removed from the tobacco. The elevated pressure is then reduced in order to convert the liquid carbon dioxide to solid carbon dioxide within the tobacco structure. The resulting solid carbon dioxide-containing tobacco is then subjected to conditions of temperature and pressure, preferably by rapid heating at atmospheric pressure, such that the solid carbon dioxide is vaporized and the tobacco is thereby expanded. Apparatus for carrying out the above described process is also provided.

    • Disclosed is a method and apparatus for processing baled tobacco leaves to separate the lamina portions of the leaves from the stem portions. The bale is cut symmetrically, crosswise to its length, into three or preferably five separate sections, of different characteristic types. A center section is cut from the middle of the bale. On each side of the center section a second section is cut; and two end sections are preferably cut, one at each end of the bale. The different types of sections have different lamina-to-stem ratios, and are processed differently. The second sections are coarsely threshed, to dislodge the larger lamina portions of the leaves from the stem portions therein, and the coarsely threshed material is separated into a first light fraction (comprising mostly lamina) and a first heavy fraction (enriched in stem content). The center section can be combined with the light fraction and can be dried and packed without the necessity of further threshing. If end sections are cut, the first heavy fraction is combined with them and is more finely threshed, to dislodge remaining lamina portions from the stem portions therein.

    • A method is provided for curing tobacco by homogenizing harvested leaves. The leaves may be pretreated in the field to achieve uniform yellowing or they can be yellowed by postharvest conditioning. The leaves are cut into 5/64 inch or smaller size pieces and homogenized in a blending or grinding type machine. The homogenized leaf material is then incubated after which the conditioned leaf material is cured. An important feature of this invention is that the composition of the cured tobacco can be altered and undesirable components reduced or eliminated by regulating the metabolic processes during curing through physical, chemical or biological means.

    • The invention is concerned with an apparatus and a method for the treatment of cut tobacco in a cigarette-making machine in which a stream of tobacco strands carried in a stream of air is subjected to microwave-radiation energy by passing it through a radiation chamber. Suitably, the wavelength of the microwave energy is in the range from 10 to 100 cms. and the stream of air carrying the tobacco is directed through the chamber at a substantial distance from the chamber walls where the energy level is low. The path of the tobacco strands through the chamber is defined by a pair of confronting end walls having straight inlet and outlet portions at their ends, and an arcuate portion therebetween that is convex toward a wave-guide that terminates in an outlet communicating with the interior of the chamber. The straight portions serve as microwave-retaining filters and the confronting walls are transparent to the passing of microwaves therethrough. A rotating fan is positioned to the passing of microwaves therethrough. A rotating fan is positioned in the chamber between the confronting walls and the energy inlet and serves to cool the adjacent arcuate wall. Tobacco leaving the chamber is formed into a filler stream and into a rod from which cigarettes may be cut.
