    • Compositions containing sulfuric acid and one or more of certain chalcogen-containing compounds in which the chalcogen compound/H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 molar ratio is below 2 contain the mono-adduct of sulfuric acid which is catalytically active for promoting organic chemical reactions. Suitable chalcogen-containing compounds have the empirical formula ##STR1## wherein X is a chalcogen, each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is independently selected from hydrogen, NR.sub.3 R.sub.4, and NR.sub.5, at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is other than hydrogen, each of R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 is hydrogen or a monovalent organic radical, and R.sub.5 is a divalent organic radical. Such compositions are useful for catalyzing organic reactions such as oxidation, oxidative addition, reduction, reductive addition, esterification, transesterification, hydrogenation, isomerication (including racemization of optical isomers), alkylation, polymerization, demetallization of organometallics, nitration, Friedel-Crafts reactions, and hydrolysis. Novel catalysts are disclosed which involve combinations of the chalcogen compound-sulfuric compositions with one or more transition metal halides and/or with one or more surfactants. The surfactant-containing compositions are particularly useful for the treatment of materials containing lipophilic substances. Novel compositions containing a chalcogen compound-sulfuric acid component and one or more organic reactants are also disclosed.

    • Articles made of ferrous, non-ferrous and light metals and alloys thereof, e.g., aluminum, beryllium, magnesium, molybdenum, steel, tantalum, titanium, tungsten, vanadium and zinc and their alloys, are pretreated before coating and surface finishing in an anhydrous, inert, aprotic liquid, and subsequently electroplated with aluminum, cadmium, indium or zinc in an aprotic organo-metal electrolyte essentially free of molecular oxygen and water and, optionally, additionally finished by anodizing, chemical oxidation or diffusion. The pretreatment may be by erosion with finely-divided abrasive particles suspended in such liquid and impinged upon the surface of the article by hydraulic jetting, or with an aprotic liquid by the liquid-drop erosion method. Alternatively, the pretreatment may be by electrolytic action in a circuit where the article serves as the anode and is immersed in an anhydrous, aprotic electrolyte. Articles so pretreated and electroplated are thereafter more readily surface-finished or mechanically shaped.

    • The instant invention is directed to an aqueous bath for the electrodeposition of bright metal deposits, and more particularly to a bath composition which provides upon the basis metal an electrodeposit having improved brightness, particularly in low current density areas, and as well, a condition of ductility markedly better than that which characterizes certain prior art baths. The electroplating bath composition of this invention embodies a polyethylenimine having the general empirical formula --[C.sub.2 H.sub.5 N].sub.x --, and a sulfonating agent for the polyethylenimine, whereby there is obtained a reaction product which contains nitrogen substituted sulfamate groups as an integral part of the polymer chain. The nitrogen substituted sulfamate unit of the reaction product is represented by the formula: ##STR1## where, M = H, Li, Na, K, or, NH.sub.4. The ratio of these nitrogen substituted sulfamate units to amino units, --[CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 NH]--, in the reaction product is determined by the molar ratio of the polymer repeat unit, --[C.sub.2 H.sub.5 N]--, to sulfonating agent in the reaction.
