    • A utility vehicle is provided with a bogey beam on which are mounted the steering axle at the forward end of the bogey beam and the middle axle on the rearward end of the bogey beam. A rear drive axle is supported by the frame of the utility vehicle. The bogey beam is connected to the frame by a pivot assembly defining a transverse pivot axis about which the bogey beam can oscillate. The weight transferred to the bogey beam is proportionately distributed between the front steering axle and middle axle. As a result, the steering characteristics of the steering axle are not impaired by the imposition of a load in the load bed of the utility vehicle, as the middle axle cannot be loaded sufficiently to overpower the front steering axle. The middle axle is rotatably driven by a chain drive transferring rotational power from the rear drive axle. The bogey beam is provided with a plurality of pivot axis locations to vary the proportions of the load applied to the front and middle axles as a result of the longitudinal movement of the bogey beam pivot.

    • The invention provides a suspension system (10) for installation between a chassis having side rail members (14,16) and cross frame members (22,24,26) and an axle (18,20) of a vehicle. A step spring (36) is included having a forward generally horizontal section (38), a rearward generally horizontal section (42), and a generally vertical section (40) between and contiguous with the forward and rearward sections (38,42) and displacing the rearward section (42) below the forward section (38). The leading end of step spring (36) is pivotally attached to the chassis with a spring (68) extending between the chassis and the trailing end of step spring (36). Axle (18,20) is pivotally secured to a mounting (58,60) on forward generally horizontal section (38) with the pivot (56) above axle (18,20).

    • A vehicle suspension system assembly for attachment to a vehicle frame having a torsion axle and at least two ground engaging wheels operatively rotatably attached to each respective end of the torsion axle has an attachment member which is adapted to be attached to the frame. An arm is operably pivotally attached to the attachment member along an axis. A torsion axle is received in a torsion axle receiving portion of the assembly at a first distance spaced from the aforementioned axis for selectively receiving the torsion axle. An air bag is operatively disposed between the frame and the arm, the air bag being spaced at a second distance from the axis. A linkage element of variable length, which can be a shock absorber, is operably attached to the frame and to the arm whereby the arm will be held at a predetermined position with respect to the frame and yet allow the arm to pivot about the axis. In a preferred embodiment, the air bag is spaced further away from the pivotal axis of the arm than is the torsion axle.
