摘要： In a method of starting an internal combustion engine, a combustion energy is generated by combusting a fuel that has been injected into a cylinder in an expansion stroke when the internal combustion engine is stopped. In the aforementioned method, the combustion energy generated by combusting the fuel is obtained based on a state of an air/fuel mixture within the cylinder to which the fuel has been injected. Based on the obtained combustion energy, a kinetic energy to be supplied to the internal combustion engine from a primary energy supply source is estimated. A difference between a predetermined target kinetic energy required for starting the internal combustion engine subsequent to the start of combustion and the estimated kinetic energy to be supplied from the primary energy supply source is obtained. The kinetic energy corresponding to the obtained difference is supplied from a secondary energy supply source in the form of a starter motor.

摘要： A control device for a variable displacement engine, coupled with an automatic transmission, for an automobile, wherein the control device controls cylinders depending on the driving condition. The control device changes working cylinders without changing the number of working cylinders during the shift operation of the automatic transmission by detecting that the automatic transmission is going to shift. When the control device changes working cylinders without changing the number of working cylinders, the control device controls cylinders so that cylinders which are non-working before the changing work after the changing, and controls cylinders so that a non-working cylinder is not followed by another non-working cylinder in the firing order of the case of all cylinders are working. When intake air is introduced into non-working cylinders and catalytic converters are required, the catalytic converters are so arranged that gases exhausted from non-working cylinders are introduced into catalytic converters which are different from catalytic converters into which gases exhausted from working cylinders are introduced through all conditions with some of cylinders working, and the quantity of intake air introduced into each working cylinder when some of cylinders work is greater than the quantity of intake air introduced into each cylinder when all cylinders work. The control device also controls the throttle valve such that the smaller the number of working cylinders, the greater the throttle valve opening relative to the depression of the accelerator pedal.

Thus, the torque required for cranking the internal combustion engine is reduced and the load applied on a starter apparatus such as a starter motor is reduced.

The system serves to combust the fuel in a cylinder in an expansion stroke when the output shaft is rotated in the reverse direction, and the resultant combustion pressure is used for performing the cranking operation. This makes it possible to reduce the load exerted to the electric motor.
