摘要： Acoustic waves are used to transfer small amounts of fluid in a non-contact manner. Acoustic waves are propagated through a pool of a source fluid in such a manner that causes the ejection of a single micro-droplet from the surface of the pool. The droplet is ejected towards a target with sufficient force to provide for contact of the droplet with the target. Because the fluid is not contacted by any fluid transfer device such as a pipette, the opportunities for contamination are minimized. Methods may be employed to transfer fluids from an array of source sites to an array of target sites, thereby enabling the precise automation of a wide variety of procedures including screening and synthesis procedures commonly used in biotechnology.

摘要： The Efb protein from Staphylococcus aureus has now been shown to have the ability to bind to the C3 protein which is a crucial component in the activation of complement, and a specific C3 binding region has been located at the C-terminal end of the Efb protein. Isolated proteins and protein fragments containing the Efb protein C3 binding region are thus provided which have complement inhibiting activity, and these proteins and fragments are particularly useful in therapeutic methods wherein the inhibition of complement is desirable, such as in the treatment of hemolytic anemia, the prevention of graft or implant rejection, and to alleviate complement activation that is associated with kidney dialysis methods such as hemodialysis.

摘要： A method for authenticating a textile material that is initiated by selecting a unique nucleic acid marker having a specific length and a specific sequence. A media that causes the unique nucleic acid marker to adhere to a fibrous material is then selected. The method then proceeds to generate a nucleic acid marker mixture by mixing the media with the nucleic acid marker. The nucleic acid marker mixture is then applied to the fibrous material. A marked fibrous material is produced by marking the fibrous material with the nucleic acid marker. The textile material is manufactured with the marked fibrous material. The textile material is then authenticated by detecting the unique nucleic acid marker with primers that are specific to the unique nucleic acid. In an alternative embodiment, the media is used as a topical treatment for the fibrous material. In another alternative embodiment, the media is a carrier media that can be added to one or more fiber manufacturing processes without affecting each of the manufacturing processes. In yet another alternative embodiment, a viscous solution for fiber spinning is selected and mixed with the nucleic acid marker to generate a viscous dope that is extruded through an opening in a spinneret to form a marked fiber that is used to generate the textile material.

摘要： An adjustable shroud arrangement is disclosed for a submergible pumping system. The pumping system is of the type used to raise fluids from wells, such as petroleum production wells. The systems include a plurality of interconnected components, including a motor and a pump driven by the motor. The systems may also include a separator for separating production fluids from non-production fluids. The shroud serves to transfer fluids between system components, such as around the motor to promote convective cooling of the motor during operation. The shroud fits around a portion of the pumping unit to define a fluid flow path. The shroud is adjustable with respect to the pumping unit to permit relative thermal expansion and contraction of the shroud and the pumping unit components. In a preferred embodiment, the shroud has one end fixed to the pumping unit and a second end slidingly seals against a component of the pumping unit. In another embodiment, both ends of the shroud are fixed to the unit and an adjustable seal is provided along the length of the shroud.

The technology mines sequence data by a process that is done partly in silico. Instead of sampling and testing a vast library of compounds, machine learning and implementation narrows the field of functional candidates by predictive modeling based on known protein structure. Candidate proteins that are selected by this analysis are then produced and screened in a high-throughput manner by recombinant expression and testing to determine whether they have a target function. Multiple cycles of the machine learning, database mining, expression, and testing are done to yield potential ingredients suitable for assessment as part of a commercial food product.
