    • An apparatus (10) for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (36) comprises a housing (12) and an inflation fluid source (34) in the housing for, when actuated, providing fluid for inflating the protection device. An electrically actuatable initiator (38) is connected with the housing (12) for actuating the inflation fluid source (34). The apparatus (10) also comprises vehicle electric circuitry (37) for actuating the initiator (38) to actuate the inflation fluid source (34) in response to sensing an occupant protection event for which inflation of the protection device (36) is desired. A microelectromechanical system device (MEMS device) (52) in the apparatus is electrically energizable to cause actuation of the inflation fluid source (34). An autoignition mechanism (40) responsive to an event other than an occupant protection event energizes the MEMS device to cause actuation of the inflation fluid source. The MEMS device (52), when energized, generates heat for autoigniting the inflation fluid source (34) or for deactivating a secondary inflation fluid source.

    • A vehicle occupant protection apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (16) having a deflated condition and an inflated condition for helping to protect the vehicle occupant. An inflation fluid source (18) is actuatable to provide inflation fluid to inflate the inflatable device (16). A housing (14) directs inflation fluid under pressure from the inflation fluid source (18) toward the inflatable device (16) upon actuation of the inflation fluid source (18). The housing (14) has an opening (38) for enabling flow of inflation fluid out of the housing (14) and away from the inflatable device (16). A door (82) is movable between a closed condition closing the opening (38) and an open condition enabling flow of inflation fluid out of the housing (14) through the opening (38). An energizable mechanism (100) retains the door (82) in the closed condition and, when energized, enables movement of the door (82) from the closed condition to the open condition in response to fluid pressure in the housing (14). The energizable mechanism (100) comprises an electromagnet (106).

    • A vehicle occupant protection apparatus (10) includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (14) which is folded so as to be deployed from a reaction structure (24) in a first direction to restrain movement of a vehicle occupant in a second, opposite direction. The folded protection device (14) has a cross-section with a configuration defined by pleats (110). Each pleat (110) has an open end (112) and a closed end (114) spaced from the open end (112) in a direction substantially parallel to the first and second directions. An inflator (12) is received within one of the pleats (110′) and has inflation fluid outlet openings (124) adjacent to the closed end (114) of the pleat (110′). A retainer ring (56) engages and supports a peripheral edge portion (72) of the folded protection device (14) in an open configuration. The bag retainer ring (56) and the edge portion (72) of the folded protection device (14) are spaced fully from the inflator (12) on opposite sides of the pleated cross-section of the folded protection device (14).

A controller (30) actuates the initiator assembly (18) in a selected one of a plurality of differing stages corresponding to a plurality of differing conditions. The differing stages of actuation include a stage in which the first igniter (26) is actuated and the second igniter (28) is not actuated.

    • An inflator for generating gas to inflate an air bag in a vehicle occupant safety apparatus comprises gas generating material, a plurality of filter layers, and a strand extending around the filter layers. The gas generating material generates gas when ignited. The filter layers filter the gas as it flows through the filter layers, and encircle the gas generating material. The filter layers include an outer layer with a cylindrical outer surface. The strand extends around the cylindrical outer surface of the outer filter layer at least partially in a helix, and has a plurality of circumferentially extending turns. The turns in the strand are spaced apart axially to define a helical gap which permits the gas to move from the cylindrical outer surface past the strand toward the air bag.
