    • A method for detecting the three-dimensional structure of a log comprises the operating steps of: making the log (2) rotate axially, leaving it free to translate during the rotation; during said rotation repeating the step of detecting the relative surface structure of the log (2) at least at one log surface portion (13), so that the relative surface structure of substantially all of the points of at least the log (2) lateral surface is detected at least once; and combining the relative surface structures detected to reconstruct an overall surface structure for at least the log (2) lateral surface, the detection steps being carried out in such a way that each detection step result shares at least several points with at least one other detection step result, while the step of combining the relative surface structures is carried out in such a way that the shared points are made to coincide with each other.

    • A system for selectively turning elongated pieces comprising a conveyor transversally receiving and carrying in a sequence the elongated pieces along a transfer course. A piece turning apparatus is mounted next to the conveyor and has a number of turning hands in which an end of one of the elongated pieces is engageable so that rotation of the turning hand effects a turning of the one of the elongated pieces about a longitudinal axis thereof when the end of the one of the elongated pieces is engaged in the turning hand. Carriages are distributively mounted onto the endless driving body and supporting respectively the turning hands so that each one of the turning hands successively moves into an engaging position with an end of one of the elongated pieces as the one of the elongated pieces is carried by the conveyor. A cam body drives the turning hands in rotation.

    • Apparatus for rotating a log delivered by an infeed conveyor about its longitudinal axis for delivery to an outfeed conveyor comprising a main frame and a rotatable housing mounted in the main frame having a passage therethrough to receive a log from the infeed conveyor. Log gripping spike rolls are mounted adjacent the passage and are adapted to grip the log while permitting continuous forward movement of the log along its longitudinal axis through the passage to the outfeed conveyor. The spike rolls are mounted to the rotatable housing for movement with the housing. A drive motor rotates the rotatable housing through a selected angle to rotate the longitudinal axis of the log held in the spike rolls.

    • A sawmill has an elongated track extending longitudinally adjacent a platform for supporting a log. A carriage which carries a bandsaw is reciprocally movable along the track past the platform to cut the log with the bandsaw. The sawmill also has a clamp mechanism reciprocally movable laterally across the platform to clamp the log in place, which mechanism is movable between an upright position and a reclining position to provide a clamp for an uncut log and a clamp for a squared log. The sawmill also has a log turning mechanism and a log loading mechanism. The log loading mechanism includes two arms which are rotatable from the ground to the platform to load a log onto the platform. A hydraulic cylinder is coupled to each arm and acts against the ground to move the arms. The mechanisms are hydraulically actuated and the sawmill includes an electric motor which drives a hydraulic pump for providing pressurized hydraulic fluid to actuate the hydraulically actuated mechanisms. A source of electricity for powering the electric motor is carried on the carriage and is interlocked to the electric motor such that electricity is provided to the electric motor only when the carriage is in a predetermined position which is preferably at one end of the track.
