    • A total pressure exhaust gas recirculation duct system includes a turbocharger having a turbine inlet scroll, an exhaust gas recirculation duct and a valve assembly disposed between a port and inlet scroll and the inlet to the exhaust gas recirculation duct. The valve is situated so that the valve blade member extends from the inlet scroll port into the exhaust gas stream to divert a portion of the exhaust gas into the EGR duct. The valve has a pivot shaft disposed within a corresponding channels of the inlet scroll housing and the EGR duct with a free end extending beyond the inlet scroll and the EGR duct for actuation of the valve. Alternatively, the valve can include a blade element attached to the distal end of an actuating rod and positioned in the port of the inlet scroll. The proximal end of the actuation rod extends through a passageway in the EGR duct or the inlet scroll for actuation of the valve. An electronic control unit actuates the valve in conjunction with pressure sensors monitoring intake gas and exhaust gas pressures and other engine condition sensors. The volume of exhaust gas diverted to the EGR duct is varied to maintain the pressure of the diverted exhaust gas at an appropriate level for mixing with the intake gas.

    • An internal combustion engine, particularly suitable for a motor vehicle, is provided with a plurality of combustion cylinders, at least a first exhaust manifold and a second exhaust manifold and at least one intake manifold. The second turbine inlet is fluidly coupled with the second exhaust manifold. The first compressor outlet is fluidly coupled with the second compressor inlet. The engine has improved performance and efficiency, with an efficient and compact turbocharger arrangement.

    • An exhaust gas recirculation system for an internal combustion engine. The present invention includes a turbocharger, restrictor valve, and exhaust gas recirculation valve. The restrictor valve is upstream of the turbine of the turbocharger, and restricts the flow of exhaust gas into the turbine. This restriction results in an increase in pressure of the exhaust gas provided to the restrictor valve. The increased pressure exhaust gas is provided to the inlet of an exhaust gas recirculation valve which may be actuatable independently of the actuation of the restrictor valve. The restrictor valve may be modulated until exhaust pressure is greater than the pressure of the intake gas. The restrictor valve creates a pressure differential suitable for recirculating a portion of exhaust gas through the EGR valve and into the intake manifold of the engine. The restrictor valve may also be operated without recirculation of exhaust gas, such as during cold starting of a diesel engine so as to increase the load on the engine and decrease the warm-up time of the engine. Some embodiments of the present invention utilize an electronic controller for operating the restrictor valve and the EGR valve.

    • There is disclosed a supercharger for an engine in which intake air is increased in pressure by the use of exhaust gas flowed into the supercharger from the engine, and is fed to the engine. An impeller 2, having a plurality of blades formed on an outer peripheral portion thereof, is received within a casing 1, and a ring-like fluid passage is formed around the plurality of blades, and a first partition 3 and a second partition 4 are provided in the fluid passage to divide this fluid passage into two fluid passages, that is, an exhaust gas passage 6 and an intake air passage 9. There is provided a fluid machine construction for causing the exhaust gas of the engine to flow into and out of the exhaust gas passage, and for causing the intake air to flow into and out of the intake air passage. With this construction, the pressure of the intake air can be satisfactorily increased over a wide range of the engine speed from a low speed to a relatively high speed, and therefore the supercharging of the engine can be effected with the inexpensive machine construction.
