    • The drive away axle assembly comprises at least an axle shaft having a proximal end seated within an axle housing and a distal terminal flange and a hub having a distal end land and a sidewall. The distal terminal flange of the axle shaft has bores therein which align with threaded bores in the distal end land of the hub, and axle shaft/hub connectors engage through the bores to removably connect the hub to the axle shaft. Further, an axle shaft retaining bolt extends through the sidewall of the hub for engagement with the axle shaft structures to maintain the axle shaft within the axle housing when the axle shaft/hub connectors are removed. Upon removal of such connectors, the hub rotates freely without imparting rotation to the axle shaft. Still further, an accessory spring may be provided for assisting in disengagement of the axle shaft flange from the hub.

    • A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus which reduces the weight, size and number of parts and also prevents ingress of rain water or dusts and leakage of differential gear oil has an axle housing supported under a body of a vehicle. A hollow drive shaft is inserted into the axle housing. A wheel bearing is arranged between the drive shaft and an opening of the axle housing and is structured as a unit including a wheel hub and a double row rolling bearing. The wheel bearing includes an inner member with a wheel hub integrally formed with a wheel mounting flange on one end and an axially extending cylindrical portion. At least one inner ring is press-fit onto the cylindrical portion of the wheel hub. The inner ring is formed with at least one of the inner raceway surfaces on its outer circumferential surface. An outer member is arranged around the inner member and formed with double row outer raceway surfaces on its inner circumferential surface opposite to the inner raceway surfaces. Double row rolling elements are arranged between the inner and outer raceway surfaces of the inner member and the outer member. A cage freely rollably holds the rolling elements. Seals seal an annular space between the inner member and the outer member. A cap, having a metal core formed from steel, is press-fit into an end of a central bore of the wheel hub.

    • In the embodiment of a wheel arrangement described in the specification, the central portion of a wheel is in the form of a disk having an annular planar attachment zone surrounding a central hole for engagement with the substantially planar face of a hub. Bolt holes evenly distributed about the annular attachment zone of the disk receive stud bolts mounted in the hub so that the wheel disk and the hub are held in angularly fixed position with respect to each other. The hub has a centering offset projecting axially from its planar face which is located concentrically with a trunnion and has the shape of a circular annulus with a slightly conically tapered peripheral surface which engages the central hole of the wheel disk so as to center the wheel precisely with respect to the trunnion. The wheel disk is removably attached to the hub by a central nut screwed onto the trunnion which engages a substantially circular axially-resilient clamp disk having a central hole and a series of oblong holes located on a bolt circle concentric therewith. The oblong bolt holes receive the hub stud bolts and are engaged in annular groove-like undercuts formed therein so as to clamp the wheel disk firmly against the hub when the central nut is tightened.

    • An axle includes a central portion with a pair of hollow spindles welded thereon which spindles are each capable of supporting a rotatable hub having a wheel and tire mounted thereon. Each hub would include an intermediate cavity which is sealed to define with a wall of the spindle a reservoir for inflation air for the tire. Inflation air is supplied to the spindle at a region axially inwardly of the hub at a predetermined circumferential location thereon. The spindles include an outer cylindrical surface at the region. Air passages formed in the wall of the spindles communicate the intermediate cavity of the hub with a radially extending passage at the outer cylindrical surface. A pair of collar elements each have an inner cylindrical surface matching the outer cylindrical surface of the spindle and a coupling passage and fitting for mating with the supply of inflation air. Each of the collar elements is respectively mounted on the outer cylindrical surface of each of the spindles with the radially extending passage and the coupling passage connected by a circumferential groove in either the outer or inner cylindrical surface and the fitting positioned at the predetermined circumferential location for mating with the supply of inflation air.

    • A method of forming an axle with hollow spindles which are each capable of supporting a rotatable hub having a wheel and tire mounted thereon. Each hub would include an intermediate cavity which is sealed to define with a wall of the spindle a reservoir for inflation air for the tire. Inflation air is supplied to the spindle at a region axially inwardly of the hub at a predetermined circumferential location thereon. The steps of forming include providing each of the spindles with an outer cylindrical surface at the region. Air passages are formed in the wall of the spindles communicating the intermediate cavity of the hub with a radially extending passage at the outer cylindrical surface. Each of the spindles is welded respectively to the opposite ends of the central portion of the axle. A pair of collar elements are formed with each collar element having an inner cylindrical surface matching the outer cylindrical surface of the spindle and a coupling passage and fitting for mating with the supply of inflation air. Each of the collar elements is respectively installed on the outer cylindrical surface of each of the spindles with the radially extending passage and the coupling passage being connected by a circumferential groove which has been formed in either the outer or inner cylindrical surface and the fitting being positioned at the predetermined circumferential location for mating with the supply of inflation air.
