    • A check encoder (11) for printing of full field MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) codes on checks, includes a check guide (19) and means for sensing the position of the check (25,27) in the check guide (19). A pair of fixed roller assemblies (29,31), coact with a pair of movable roller assemblies (33,35) to grip the check and move the check under the action of a stepper motor (44) to an initial known position. A hammer (87), mounted in a hammer mount (83) and activated by an electrical solenoid (91) impacts the check against successive selected characters on a font wheel (61) to print the desired MICR code. A computer program, controls the operation of the check positioning, check encoding and check moving operations. When the desired MICR code has been printed on the check, the check is moved out of the encoder (11) by means of the fixed and movable roller assemblies (29,31,33 and 35).

    • A thermal ink transfer printing apparatus comprising a carriage moved along the rotating shaft of a platen roller, and a thermal head provided with a row of heating elements. An ink ribbon fed from an ink ribbon feeding reel and wound around an ink ribbon winding reel after passing through the thermal head. The ink ribbon feeding and winding reels are arranged on the carriage. When current is applied to the solenoid, the thermal head is pressed against the platen roller to closely contact the ink ribbon with a recording sheet on the circumference of the platen roller, while when current supply is stopped to the solenoid, the thermal head is retreated to peel off the ink ribbon from the recording sheet. When blanks corresponding to two serial characters are applied to the thermal head, both of current supply to the solenoid and the winding of the ink ribbon are stopped, to thereby avoid the winding of the ink ribbon unused.

    • Apparatus for printing a succession of individual inscriptions on a continuous strip of material by transfer of a printing medium from a continuous ribbon coated therewith wherein the apparatus includes a unique motion transfer mechanism for automatically advancing the ribbon at each printing sequence. The mechanism also provides for selective adjustment of the distance by which the ribbon is advanced at each cycle. A first cam carried by the printing apparatus drive shaft moves type faces sequentially in and out of contact with the ribbon and a second cam on the same drive shaft effects intermittent rotation of a friction roller to advance the ribbon when the type face is out of contact therewith. The second cam drives a reciprocating arm which transmits motion to a pawl and ratchet, a manually positionable stop being provided to limit travel to the arm, and thereby rotation of the ratchet and friction roll to determine the amount of ribbon advance at each cycle.
