    • The present invention is an inked ribbon advancement mechanism which is used in combination with a printer having a movable print head. The printer includes a frame and a print head mechanically coupled to the frame so that it travels laterally along the front of the frame. The inked ribbon advancement mechanism includes an apparatus for continuously advancing an increment of inked ribbon in response to the position of the print head. The apparatus includes a device for positioning the increment of inked ribbon adjacent to the print head and a slidable member which is slidably coupled to the print head in parallel juxtaposition so that the slidable member can move differentially in response to the print head. The apparatus also includes a cam for continuously displacing the slidable member in response to the movement of the print head. The print head is mechanically coupled to a plate member to which a pair of ribbon spools are rotatably coupled so that the print head and the increment of inked ribbon from the ribbon spools travel together.

    • A printing ribbon indexing mechanism for use with a printing mechanism utilizing a pair of operating hammer members. The indexing mechanism includes a printing ribbon supply reel mounted on a slip clutch, a take-up reel supplying tension to the ribbon, a pair of stationary rollers, a pair of movable rollers, each of which is mounted to one of the hammer members and a pressure roller mounted on a one-way clutch. Movement of either of the hammer members in a printing operation will allow the movable roller which is attached to that hammer member, to withdraw ribbon from the supply roller such that the hammer member will print on a new area of the printing ribbon.

    • A printer comprises a printing mechanism (9) composed of a platen (9b) and a printing head (9c) for printing on a recording medium (C, S) via an ink ribbon, a paper path (30, 33) for guiding the recording medium to and past said printing mechanism (9), the printing head (9c) and the platen (9b) being disposed facing each other on opposite sides of the paper path (30), an ink ribbon feeding device (9e, 9d) for transporting the ink ribbon between the printing head and the paper path (30), a medium transport mechanism (7, 91, 92) for transporting the recording medium (C, S) along the paper path (30, 33), a detecting device (6, 96) for detecting a predetermined position of said recording medium along the paper path (30, 33), and a controller (100) for controlling the ink ribbon feeding device (9e, 9d). The controller (100) causes the ink ribbon feeding device (9e, 9d) to transport the ink ribbon by a predetermined amount in response to an output signal from the detecting unit indicating that the recording medium is at the predetermined position.
