    • A thermal printer allows ink ribbon replacement without interference of a hook positioned in the opened state particularly in an ink ribbon replacement operation.A thermal printer includes a head lock lever 40 which includes a hook 41 at the tip of the lever. The hook is mounted such that it can be moved in the longitudinal direction relative to a turn shaft 26 during turning of the turn shaft 26, allowing the distance between the turn shaft 26 and the hook 41 to be changed. A movement control moves the head lock lever 40 such that the distance between the turn shaft 26 and the hook 41 in the opened state in which the thermal head 12 is separated from the platen roller 11 is smaller than that in the pressed state in which the thermal head 12 is pressed into contact with the platen roller 11.

    • A printer cartridge includes exit and entrance arms for receiving and exiting ribbon from the cartridge in response to a drive mechanism whereby the ribbon passes from the exit arm to an entrance arm past a printhead. An oscillator is coupled to the ribbon drive mechanism and includes a cam carried by the cartridge engaging a cam lever pivotally carried by the cartridge. The lever bears against a printer support when the cartridge is disposed in the printer. When the drive mechanism advances the ribbon, the oscillator is also driven to pivot the cartridge about a longitudinal axis, thereby gradually locating upper and lower portions of the ribbon in registration with the printhead as the ribbon advances.

    • Disclosed is a dot impact printer wherein a ribbon cassette formed, at its both end portions, with a pair of arm portions, respectively, between which an ink ribbon is exposed, and the ink ribbon therebetween is inserted and placed between a printing head and a platen. According to the first invention, the printer comprises a supporting frame displaceable between a first position for inserting the ink ribbon into the printing head and the platen and a second position for drawing out the ink ribbon from between these two. According to the second invention, the printer comprises an auto loading means which, in a condition in which the ribbon cassette is retained by the supporting frame, moves the ink ribbon to an insertion position where it is inserted between the printing head and the platen and to a draw-out position where it is drawn out from between these two.

    • A ribbon cartridge (10) is attached to a carrier (1) of a printing device such that it is tiltable along an axis that is parallel to the print line to drop the ribbon such that the print line is visible. That part of cartridge (10) which is opposite of the ribbon exposing part and on the other side of tilting axis (18) is on its bottom provided with a ribbon advance knob (8). Into this knob (8) two essentially upright standing walls and inclined ramps (11) are molded. The ribbon feed device (6), provided on carrier (1), has a blade (5) or noses (17) which cooperate with slot-forming walls (12) of knob (8). In ribbon drive direction (14) cartridge (10) automatically drops into coupling interconnection for ribbon feed. Upon turning ribbon feed device (6) in reverse direction (16) blade (5) or noses (17) slide up ramp (11) and lift the rear part and drop the front part of the cartridge (10) so that the print line is rendered visible.

    • A high-speed printer is described which employs a character impression forming ribbon that traverses across a printing area and is selectably movable to permit character impression and subsequent visibility of the character formed. The high-speed printer utilizes a pair of pivoted cantilever arms, one mounted on each side of the printing area. Ribbon guides are mounted adjacent the end of each of the cantilever arms, and the character impression forming ribbon is supported between the two guides across the width of the printing area. A controlled acceleration three-position ribbon raising and lowering differential mechanism is provided for simultaneously raising and lowering the cantilever arms whereby the ribbon is selectively moved as a relatively rigid beam between either of two printing positions or the viewing position by pivotal raising and lowering movement of the cantilever arms. The ribbon raising and lowering means comprises controlled acceleration cam-driven means that operates through a suitable cam follower and linkage arrangement to pivot the cantilever arms in a manner to shift the ribbon from a nonprinting viewing position to a nonviewing printing position and return. The high-speed printer further includes a number of character impression forming hammers for selectively engaging the ribbon at desired points to form character impressions on a recording medium supported on the printer. The character impression forming hammers are selectively moved by a drive mechanism that is independently driven with respect to the controlled acceleration drive means for raising and lowering the cantilever arms.
