    • An electronic engine control monitors engine speed, vehicle speed and determines various engine RPM values and RPM ranges used in fueling a molar vehicle engine to achieve desired engine speeds prior to and during an automatic gear shift sequence. The engine is coupled to a manual/automatic transmission that includes manually selectable gear operation modes and automatically selectable gear operation modes. In order to assist gear engagement of the automatically selectable gears, the engine is fueled to a series of predetermined RPM levels to rock the transmission gears into engagement. In so doing, throttle control by the operator is first inhibited and the engine is first governed to a synchronous RPM value. Throttle control is returned to the operator if gear engagement is verified within a first predetermined delay period. If gear engagement is not verified, the engine RPM is periodically increased or decreased, depending on whether an upshift or downshift is attempted, and throttle control is returned to the operator if gear engagement is verified within a second or third predetermined delay period. If gear engagement is still not verified, the engine RPM is returned to the synchronous RPM value for a fourth predetermined delay period. If gear engagement does not occur within the fourth delay period, an error recovery routine is executed.

    • An apparatus and method for determining start of fuel injection (SOI), preferably in an open nozzle fuel injection system, comprises means for obtaining injector train load data as a function of crank shaft timing, and a computer for sampling the data, performing a smoothing operation thereon, computing a first derivative of the smoothed injector train load data samples with respect to crank shaft timing, computing a maximum value of the first derivative, computing a predefined fraction of the maximum value of the first derivative, and mapping the predefined fraction of the maximum value of the first derivative to its corresponding crank shaft angle, wherein the corresponding crank shaft angle defines the crank shaft angle, measured in degrees relative to piston top dead center, at which SOI occurs. In an alternative embodiment, the smoothing operation and computation of the first derivative may be combined into a single operation.

    • A valve for selectively permitting the flow of fluid therethrough is disclosed including a housing having at least one inlet and at least one outlet, a valve seat provided in the housing about the inlet, a displaceable ball for cooperating with the valve seat for sealing fluidic communication between the inlet and outlet and a ball guide for guiding the ball between a closed position in contact with the valve seat and an open position spaced from the valve seat. The ball guide includes a central bore for reciprocally receiving the ball and a plurality of circumferentially spaced fluid passages in fluid communication with the inlet, the passages extending substantially parallel to a longitudinal extent of the central bore such that a flow of fluid through the inlet is directed radially outwardly from the central bore and into the circumferentially spaced passages when the ball is in the open position. Fluid flow through the valve seat is thus restricted to flow through a sharp right angle bend allowing more fluid momentum to be used to hold the ball in a stable position. Accordingly, a majority of the flow is directed underneath the ball and only a small amount of flow goes through the clearance between the ball and the central bore of the ball guide, such that the ball is maintained in a stable condition thus resulting in more consistent flow metering.

    • An engine misfire detection system for an internal combustion engine includes a microprocessor based controller for providing an increasing fuel command signal to any cylinder in the engine. The contribution to engine speed of the particular cylinder under test is monitored and compared to the contribution to engine speed of the previous two cylinders in the firing sequence. A misfire condition is detected if the average contribution to engine speed of the cylinder under test does not exceed the greater average contribution to engine speed of the previous two cylinders by a predetermined amount after a predetermined number of engine cycles. A temporary fault is logged for the cylinder under test if such a misfire condition occurs a predetermined subsequent number of times thereafter. If such a temporary fault condition is detected during a subsequent driving cycle, a driver warning lamp is illuminated.

    • An oil drain tube disposed and connected between a turbocharger and an engine block for providing a fluid communication conduit includes a hollow tubular member having a first insertion end which is receivable within an engine block bore, and a second opposite mounting end having a flange for attaching the oil drain tube to the turbocharger. The insertion end of the oil drain tube having a sealing portion which includes two annular grooves with O-rings circumferentially mounted therein, and a stop portion defined by an annular protuberance formed adjacent to the annular grooves of the tubular member. A leak proof connection is provided at the engine block. The protuberance formed on the drain tube abuts the engine block when the drain tube is connected thereto and limits the axial insertion of the drain tube into the bore. The mounting end of the drain tube is spaced axially apart from the insertion end of the drain tube by a flexible tubular portion which enables a service technician to bend the tube as required during installation. The flange, having opposing clearance holes formed therein, is captured on the mounting end of the drain tube. A bolt passing through each clearance hole of the flange is engagable with a threaded bore machined in the turbocharger, and draws the flange into contact with the turbocharger thereby creating a leak-proof connection.
