    • An electronic engine control monitors engine speed, vehicle speed and determines various engine RPM values and RPM ranges used in fueling a molar vehicle engine to achieve desired engine speeds prior to and during an automatic gear shift sequence. The engine is coupled to a manual/automatic transmission that includes manually selectable gear operation modes and automatically selectable gear operation modes. In order to assist gear engagement of the automatically selectable gears, the engine is fueled to a series of predetermined RPM levels to rock the transmission gears into engagement. In so doing, throttle control by the operator is first inhibited and the engine is first governed to a synchronous RPM value. Throttle control is returned to the operator if gear engagement is verified within a first predetermined delay period. If gear engagement is not verified, the engine RPM is periodically increased or decreased, depending on whether an upshift or downshift is attempted, and throttle control is returned to the operator if gear engagement is verified within a second or third predetermined delay period. If gear engagement is still not verified, the engine RPM is returned to the synchronous RPM value for a fourth predetermined delay period. If gear engagement does not occur within the fourth delay period, an error recovery routine is executed.

    • A portable cooking oil filtering apparatus for cleaning cooking oil which includes a tank having a top and a bottom, for receiving soiled cooking oil. A pump assembly, which includes a reversible pump and piping connecting with the tank through an opening and to the reversible pump allows pumping of soiled cooking oil into and out of the tank. A frame is provided which includes a pair of wheels supporting the tank, and a handle to facilitate easy portability of the oil filtering apparatus. A wand assembly is connected with the piping. The wand assembly includes a hose and a wand. A wand housing which is adapted to store the wand and is formed in a portion of the top of the tank. The wand housing is connected with the interior of the tank. A lid is arranged over the top of the tank. The lid includes a latch which is operative to secure it in a closed position.

    • A deep oil fryer and filtration system is disclosed wherein the filtration system (B) is disposed within a cabinet (16) of a deep oil fryer (A) having a plurality of vats (10, 12, and 14). Filtration system (B) includes a drawer having a reservoir (20) and an adjacent utility compartment (40). A pre-filter (34) is disposed in a filter basket (30) received in reservoir (20) and spaced above a bottom wall of a reservoir by the legs (32). A drain outlet (28) from the reservoir delivers cooking oil to a pump (70). A flow line system which minimizes retention of cooking oil in the lines includes a reservoir outlet line (74), a filter inlet line (78), a filter by-pass line (80), and a return line (86). Whenever by-pass valve (82) is open and pump (70) is on, pre-filtered oil from filter (36) passes through filter inlet (50) and exits filter outlet (64) without passing through a filter element ( 48) to preheat the filter. The by-passed oil is returned to the cooking vat for rinsing out the cooking vat. When by-pass valve (82) is closed, oil entering filter inlet (50) is forced through filter element (48) on both ends (54a) and (56a). Primary filter (C) is a pressure filter which provides a final filtration of the prefiltered oil. Advantageously, pressure filter (C) includes an end cap (46) which is removable so that filter element (48) may be replaced from an opening in the oil reservoir to obtain any spillage.

    • A variable refractive index device, such as a Bragg cell, is temperature stabilized by sensing ray path deviations of a secondary diffracted beam. Two photodetectors with centers offset from the exit position of the central ray of the beam at normal temperature operation receive light energy as a function of the deviation of this ray path from the normal position. Light in each fiber is detected to derive electrical signals that are utilized to establish a correction signal to a voltage controlled oscillator which varies the frequency thereof and compensates for the diffraction deviations caused by temperature variations.
