    • A printer provided with a micro-electro-mechanical printhead for producing wallpaper, the printer comprising: a micro-electro-mechanical printhead extending at least the width of a media web; drive means to drive the media web past the printhead; at least one processor to receive and process a selected wallpaper pattern and to control printing of the wallpaper pattern, by the printhead, on the media web; the printhead including of a plurality of printhead tiles arranged along the length of the printhead; a fluid channel member adjacent the printhead; each printhead tile including a series of micro-electro-mechanical nozzle arrangements, each nozzle arrangement in fluid communication with the fluid channel member; and, each nozzle arrangement comprising: a nozzle chamber for holding fluid; a lever arm for forcing at least part of the fluid from the nozzle chamber; an actuator beam for distorting the lever arm; and, at least one electrode for receiving an electrical current that heats and expands the actuator beam.

    • The present invention is an improved rotary cutting device for continuously cutting a web of material, such as paper, cardboard, plastic sheet, steel sheet, aluminum foil, etc. In particular, the present invention relates to a rotary cutter assembly for continuously cutting a web of material to predetermined lengths with cut lines that are essentially perpendicular to the feed direction of the web. A knife rotor is provided with its axis of rotation being perpendicular to the feed direction of the web to be cut. A straight knife is embedded in a straight slot on the knife rotor with a straight blade protruding radially from the surface of the rotor. The blade is positioned at an angle to the axis of rotation of the knife rotor. A stationary round bar is provided next to the knife rotor and cooperates with the knife rotor to cut the web passed therebetween. The stationary round bar is also angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the knife rotor, but in the opposite direction relative to the blade, so that an arc subscribed by any given point of the blade throughout the length of the blade is tangent to the external circumferential surface of the stationary round bar. During operation, a shear cut can be made to the continuous web passed between the knife rotor and the stationary round bar, producing a straight cut line perpendicular to the feed direction of the web.

    • A rotary die cutter having an anvil cylinder that is operable alternately with one of a pair of die cylinders includes a vertical support and rectilinear translation arrangement that permits selective repositioning of each of the die cylinders between an operative position and a stand-by position utilizing various combinations of horizontal and vertical linear movement of the cylinders. In the presently preferred embodiment, the supporting frames of all three cylinders, in operation, are in abutting contact and vertically aligned to assure that shock loads are directed vertically downwardly into the supporting base. The operator has direct access to each of the die cylinders for maintenance and order change from a single station positioned below the board line.

    • A method and apparatus are taught for cutting a sheet material comprising the steps of engaging a first side of the laminated web structure with a crack initiator having a high rake angle, the crack initiator extending from a first cutter base having a low rake angle; simultaneously engaging a second side of the laminated web structure with a second cutter; generating a first crack in the first side of the laminated web structure with the crack initiator, generating a second crack in the second side of the laminated web structure with the second cutter, and propagating the first crack and the second crack to intersect. The crack initiator extends from a cutter base to a height of at least 5 μm. The high rake angle of the crack initiator is in the range of from about 30° to about 70°. The cutter base has a low rake angle that is at least about 15° less than the high rake angle of the crack initiator.
