    • A device for cutting a web of material into signatures and folding the signatures comprising a first set of movable elements and a second set of movable elements, the web moving between the first and second sets of movable elements in a signature formation area. The first set of movable elements includes a first cutting element and a second cutting element variably-spacable with respect to the first cutting element and the second set of movable elements includes a first gripping element for interacting with the first cutting element and a first tucking element variably-spacable with respect to the first gripping element. Also provided is a method for cutting a web into signatures and folding the signatures comprising the steps of spacing a plurality of cutting elements along a first side of the web to set a signature length, spacing a plurality of gripping elements on a second side of the web opposite the plurality of cutting elements, the web traveling between the cutting elements and the gripping elements in a signature formation area, and spacing a plurality of tucking elements on the second side of the web, one of the tucking elements being spaced in between two of the plurality of gripping elements.

    • A web-up system is provided for a web-fed printing press, the web fed printing press having a plurality of components including a slitter mechanism. The web-up system includes either or both a web-up device and a ribbon winder. The web-up device is located adjacent to an output of a first component of the web-fed printing press, the first component located upstream from the slitter mechanism. The web-up device includes a splicing mechanism and a secondary web roll rotatably mounted on a shaft. The splicing mechanism receives a first web of material from the first component, receives a second web of material from the secondary web roll, splices the first web of material to the second web of material, and outputs a spliced web of material to the next downstream component of the press, e.g., the slitter mechanism. The ribbon winder is coupled to an output of the slitter mechanism. The slitter mechanism slits the web of material into at least a first and second ribbon. The ribbon winder includes a roller for receiving the second ribbon. The roller maintains a substantially constant tension in the second ribbon by winding said second ribbon around an outer surface of the roller.

    • A method for folding signatures is provided. The method includes the steps of forcing a trail edge of a first signature away from a folding cylinder using a signature support, tucking a second signature held by a gripper using a tucker at a first fold location and performing a mode change to tuck a further signature at a second fold location different from the first fold location, the mode change including moving the gripper and the signature support automatically with respect to the tucker. A signature support is also provided.
