    • A system and method for barrier submersion cooking comprising a thin walled plastic cooking pouch for receiving a food item effectively dimensioned such that when placed into a hot liquid cooking medium a vent remains above a top surface of the liquid cooking medium and a rack for lowering the vessel into the liquid cooking medium to an effective depth such that the food item received by the pouch is below the top surface of the liquid cooking medium and the vent is above the top surface of the liquid cooking medium. The pouch is formed of food grade pliable polymer film having a melt temperature above that of a temperature used in conventional hot oil frying processes, a heat transfer rate of an effective value to substantially instantaneously transfer heat from the liquid cooking medium to create an effective frying temperature upon the food item, and a pliability such that the pouch will collapse on itself when exposed to hydrostatic pressures when submerged within the liquid cooking medium, thereby effectively transferring heat to all food item surfaces.

    • The present invention is an improved rotary cutting device for continuously cutting a web of material, such as paper, cardboard, plastic sheet, steel sheet, aluminum foil, etc. In particular, the present invention relates to a rotary cutter assembly for continuously cutting a web of material to predetermined lengths with cut lines that are essentially perpendicular to the feed direction of the web. A knife rotor is provided with its axis of rotation being perpendicular to the feed direction of the web to be cut. A straight knife is embedded in a straight slot on the knife rotor with a straight blade protruding radially from the surface of the rotor. The blade is positioned at an angle to the axis of rotation of the knife rotor. A stationary round bar is provided next to the knife rotor and cooperates with the knife rotor to cut the web passed therebetween. The stationary round bar is also angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the knife rotor, but in the opposite direction relative to the blade, so that an arc subscribed by any given point of the blade throughout the length of the blade is tangent to the external circumferential surface of the stationary round bar. During operation, a shear cut can be made to the continuous web passed between the knife rotor and the stationary round bar, producing a straight cut line perpendicular to the feed direction of the web.

    • A plurality of spaced, endless, coplanar, envelope feed belts have their upper runs interleaved and coplanar with the upper run of an envelope support belt at one end of the apparatus, which conveys the envelopes through an apparatus for applying sealant material to the flap closure portion and an adjacent body portion of the envelope. The envelopes are smoothly transferred from the feed belts to the support belt due to the simultaneous support of both belt systems at the delivery end of the apparatus. Another belt is then overlapped with the support belt at the delivery end of the apparatus to clamp the envelopes therebetween as they are conveyed through the sealant applying apparatus.

    • Apparatus for feeding and applying a length of an adhesive tape to a reusable envelope closure. Tape is fed from a supply roll by a draw roll which is in contact with the adhesive surface of the tape to frictionally advance the tape between a stationary knife blade and a rotary knife blade. The tape is cut to a desired length by the cooperating edges of the knife blades and delivered to a vacuum roll which transports the cut length of tape to the envelope and presses it onto the envelope to form a part of the reusable closure. A cooperating convex and concave roller forms the tape into a V prior to it being cut to rigidify it as it is cut. Means are also provided to vary the length of tape which is cut and to stop operation of the apparatus upon sensing the absence of an envelope beneath the apparatus.

    • A method and apparatus for placing an item of food into a cooking vessel capable of quickly achieving an effective frying temperature after placement into the hot cooking oil of a deep fryer is disclosed. The vessel includes a food containment area where food is placed in intimate contact with an interior wall of the vessel. Using a rack, the vessel is submerged into the oil to an effective depth such that the food item containment area remains below the surface of the cooking oil in the deep fryer while a vent of the cooking vessel remains above the cooking oil surface. Heat is substantially instantaneously transferred from the oil through the cooking vessel to the food item contained therein, causing the food to fry. Steam emitted from the food during cooking escapes through the vent.

    • A method and apparatus for placing a food item into a cooking vessel fabricated from a material with an effective heat transfer rate that will cause the temperature of the interior vessel wall to achieve effective frying temperature substantially instantaneously after placement into hot cooking oil. The vessel is effectively dimensioned so that it can be placed into the hot oil of the deep fryer while a vent remains above the top surface of the oil. A food item is inserted into the cooking vessel to fit snuggly into a food containment area of the vessel such that it intimately contacts the interior vessel walls. Using a rack, the vessel is lowered into the deep fryer's hot oil to an effective depth such that the food item containment area is below the surface of the oil while the vent remains above the top level of the hot oil. Due to the high heat transfer characteristics inherent in the vessel, heat is substantially instantaneously transferred from the hot oil through the cooking vessel to the food item contained within, causing the food item to start frying substantially immediately. Steam and hot vapors omitted from the food during the frying process escape through the vent opening of the cooking vessel.
