    • There is disclosed a drive mechanism for a printing head of a printing machine of the kind where the print head moves with respect to the material to be printed, the mechanism including an elongated electromagnet to provide a magnetic field, a coiled electrical conductor slidably mounted for movement under the influence of the magnetic field and adapted for connection to a print head, and a circuit connected to the conductor for sensing the position of the electrical conductor with respect to a datum and for controlling the supply of electric current to the conductor so as to control the movement of the conductor. The supply of current to the electromagnet and the coil are independently variable. The position sensing circuit can be used to control the supply of current to the electromagnet and the coil.

    • A carriage for a printer or the like comprises a movable carrier which is indexed by cooperating, sliding and stationary racks lying just beneath the circumference of an axially fixed carrier support shaft. Drive and hold latches on the carrier are spring biased into contact with respective racks. Solenoid oscillation of the sliding rack one column position causes like incrementation of the carrier. Angular rotation of the shaft moves the drive and hold latches from their racks into contact with smooth shaft surfaces, causing automatic return of the carrier under dashpot action to the first column print position.

    • Disclosed is a shuttle mechanism of a dot line printer including a printing shuttle unit making a reciprocating motion to perform dot printing and a balance shuttle unit making a motion in a direction opposite to the kinetic motion of the printing shuttle unit. This shuttle mechanism is constructed of a linear motor in which a movable unit for the reciprocating motion and a magnetic circuit are separated. With this construction, the movable unit can be decreased in weight. Therefore, the high-speed reciprocating motion can be made, and high-speed printing is thereby attainable. The balance shuttle unit is disposed under the printing shuttle unit. The apparatus can be thereby made compact.

    • A linear motor which mounts and drives a hammer bank shuttle assembly in reciprocating fashion within a dot matrix line printer is controlled by a digital servo. The digital servo includes an encoder for generating a pulse each time the shuttle assembly passes one of a succession of different positions along a linear path of movement therefor together with apparatus for measuring the time intervals between successive pulses, comparing the time intervals with a reference value, generating error signals in accordance with the difference and applying the error signals to vary the durations of driving pulses applied to the linear motor. Whenever the shuttle assembly reaches either of opposite end positions along the path of linear movement, the digital servo provides to the linear motor a turnaround signal of predetermined value which drives the linear motor through rebounding from an elastomeric stop member independent of the actual speed of the shuttle assembly and in a manner which is designed to compensate for friction losses during the rebounding. Following each rebounding of the linear motor from an elastomeric stop member the speed of the shuttle assembly is measured, stored and subsequently applied to adjust the value of the turnaround signal applied to the linear motor during the immediately following rebounding of the linear motor from the same elastomeric stop member.

    • A high-speed printer includes a standard printing element, such as a daisy wheel, a paper feed mechanism and a ribbon feed mechanism. All of these various devices are controlled by a single linear actuator which comprises an elongated cylindrical magnet, C-shaped in cross-section, through which a ferrous core axially extends. A plurality of separate armatures envelope the core in the air gap between the magnet and core and are adapted to move linearly upon application thereto of a control current. The armatures control, respectively, the movement of the carriage containing the printer element, the rotation of the printer element, the advancement of the paper feed mechanism and the incremental positioning in both directions of the ink ribbon.
