    • A line printer apparatus with which a printing control operation is carried out by using a printing mechanism and printing operation control unit in which the reversal of the motion of a printing unit is carried out in synchronization with the feeding of a paper to be printed. The apparatus includes a decision unit for deciding whether or not a shuttle carrying the printing unit should be stopped during the reversal of the motion in accordance with printing information supplied to a unit for controlling the driving of the shuttle and the condition of feeding of the paper; reversing motion stopping means for stopping the reversing motion of the printing unit and holding it in the stopped state by supplying reversing stopping information to the printing operation control means when the paper feeding time of the paper to be printed is greater than the time of the reversing motion of the printing unit; and releasing means for releasing the stopping of the reversing motion of the printing unit in relation to the timing of termination of paper feeding of the paper to be printed and restarting the printing from a printing starting position. Therefore, the printing operation is restarted immediately after the termination of a paper feeding operation even when the time of the paper feeding is longer than the time of reversing motion of the printing unit.

    • A brushless DC motor, most especially a linear motor, has a wound and an unwound part, one part forming the stator and the other the armature, and includes a permanent field magnet arrangement to generate flux and windings linked by the flux. One motor part is provided with a series of flux-conducting portions and the other part is provided with a plurality of flux-carrying portions forming an air gap with the flux-conducting portions. By making the distance from one flux-conducting portion to the next small, and the distance from one flux-carrying portion to the next small, it becomes possible to minimize the distance through which the armature need move to go from a position linking maximum first-polarity flux with a respective winding to a position linking maximum second-polarity flux with that winding. By then providing the flux-carrying portions in an appropriately increased number, to thereby increase the values of the maximum first- and second-polarity linked flux, the force-to-velocity ratio of the motor can be almost arbitrarily increased, this being the equivalent of providing in a rotary motor speed-reducing gearing of high mechanical advantage.

    • The poles of a variable reluctance type linear stepper motor are arranged in an odd plural number of pairs and each pole is provided with two windings. For each pole pair, one winding of the pole of the particular pair is connected in series-aiding relationship with one of the windings of the other pole of the pair. The other two windings of the particular pair of poles are also connected in series-aiding relationship. The series connected windings are selectively energizable in predetermined stepping sequences for single phase, double phase and alternate single and double phase energizing operational modes. As a result, relative motion is provided between the pole structure of the motor and its variable reluctance member. The directions of energization of the respective two series connected windings of each particular pole pair are in opposition with respect to each other. The energization is such that the change of direction of the flux through the poles is minimized between steps, thereby providing a concomitant reduction in electrical and/or heat losses.

    • A shuttle apparatus for a printer having a print shuttle unit driven to reciprocate. The print shuttle unit includes a print shuttle provided with a print head and movable along a guide device. A row of permanent magnets are attached to the print shuttle, and a row of electromagnetic coils are secured to a stationary member so as to face the permanent magnets across a gap. The coils and the permanent magnets constitute a linear motor for reciprocating the print shuttle unit along the guide device. A balance shuttle unit having approximately the same weight as that of the print shuttle unit is disposed so that the center of gravity of the balance shuttle unit travels on a line approximately the same as the line of travel of the center of gravity of the print shuttle unit. The balance shuttle unit is driven to reciprocate in linked relation to the print shuttle unit in parallel but reverse in direction to the print shuttle unit.
