    • A dot matrix printer having a reciprocating hammer bank prints characters in either a standard or a compressed size using one of two different sets of modulation bits stored in a character generator for each character. A control code byte preceding each line of characters to be printed selects the sets of modulation bits in the character generator to be used and in addition selects the repetitive counts to be made by two different decoders in response to timing pulses designating the different dot column positions during each sweep of the hammer bank to control the application of the modulation bits from the character generator to actuating mechanisms for the hammers within the hammer bank. The compressed characters are the same height as but of reduced width compared to the standard characters, with the result that each hammer in the hammer bank prints a greater number of compressed characters than standard characters while bidirectionally reciprocating through a fixed distance relative to a paper or other printable medium.

    • A linear motor which mounts and drives a hammer bank shuttle assembly in reciprocating fashion within a dot matrix line printer is controlled by a digital servo. The digital servo includes an encoder for generating a pulse each time the shuttle assembly passes one of a succession of different positions along a linear path of movement therefor together with apparatus for measuring the time intervals between successive pulses, comparing the time intervals with a reference value, generating error signals in accordance with the difference and applying the error signals to vary the durations of driving pulses applied to the linear motor. Whenever the shuttle assembly reaches either of opposite end positions along the path of linear movement, the digital servo provides to the linear motor a turnaround signal of predetermined value which drives the linear motor through rebounding from an elastomeric stop member independent of the actual speed of the shuttle assembly and in a manner which is designed to compensate for friction losses during the rebounding. Following each rebounding of the linear motor from an elastomeric stop member the speed of the shuttle assembly is measured, stored and subsequently applied to adjust the value of the turnaround signal applied to the linear motor during the immediately following rebounding of the linear motor from the same elastomeric stop member.

    • A core memory unit is disclosed using double card modules with each module having an X wire system common to both cards, and further having several Y wire systems, one per bit position (bit plane). The module holds decoders for X and Y wire systems, driven by a predecoder system common to all modules and external thereto. The Y wire systems operate with anticoincidence, the sense wire system is a double wire system, each wire being rectangularly looped as threaded through half of the cores of the bit locations of each bit position to suppress noise.
