    • A five-high rolling mill is disclosed which includes an upper work roll backed by an intermediate roll and a backup roll and a lower work roll backed up by a single backup roll. Control benders are provided on each of the intermediate roll and the upper and lower work rolls. In order to optimize the control of the rolling operation for skinpass rolling and the like, the control benders for the upper work roll and the intermediate backup roll are controlled so as to effect a control of the crown sheet over the entire width of the material being rolled, while the control bender for the lower work roll controls the sheet crown of the rolled material at the lateral side end portions, resulting in a composite control substantially improving the sheet quality and preventing edge wrinkles in the material being rolled. In the disclosure embodiments, the intermediate roll has a larger drum length than a predetermined maximum sheet width of rolled material to be rolled by the work roll.

    • A high speed pickling device for causing a thin plate to travel in acid fluid and removing through pickling oxidized scales which are formed on the surfaces of the thin plate, a plurality of weir members which dam wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surfaces of the thin plate over substantially the entire width of the thin plate are provided in the traveling direction of the thin plate with a predetermined interval and close to the thin plate.The weir members are provided close to the surfaces of the thin plate for damming and stripping off wakes of the acid fluid flowing along the surface of the thin plate at the inlet sides of these weir members, the acid fluid is caused to deflect in the opposite direction away from the thin plate, and fresh acid fluid is sucked onto its surface at the outlet sides of the weir members along with the traveling of the thin plate.According to the present invention indicated above, by providing the weir members close to the thin plate, wakes of the acid fluid which flows along the thin plate is dammed and the most part thereof is stripped off from the thin plate. This stripped acid fluid flows in an opposite direction away from the thin plate and is drained along the weir members. The remaining wakes which were not stripped off by the weir members pass through a narrow clearance between the thin plate and the weir members and proceeds to the outlet sides of the weir members in the form of thin layered wakes. At the outlet sides of the weir members thickness of the wakes along the thin plate again tends to increase and fresh acid fluid is sucked to increase the wake thickness. By these draining and sucking of the acid fluid, replacement of the acid fluid is surely performed and pickling effect is enhanced and the pickling time is shortened.

    • A lubricant is supplied from headers of lubricant supply units onto surfaces of back-up rolls at locations spaced from contact positions between a pair of work rolls and a pair of back-up rolls. The headers each include a lubricant spray nozzle for spraying the lubricant under a pressure not lower than 3 kg/cm.sup.2, a header cover for confining the lubricant sprayed from the lubricant spray nozzle, an oil return line for returning the surplus lubricant, and seal members made of flexible material such as rubber. The work rolls are provided with water wiping plates, and the back-up rolls are also provided with water wiping plates. In a work rolls crossing type mill thus arranged, water films of cooling water deposited on the roll surfaces are removed to prevent the cooling water from mixing into the lubricant. Even if the water films are not totally removed, it is possible to surely plate out the lubricant for reliably lubricating between the work rolls and the back-up rolls. Raw lubricant oil of the lubricant meets the following requirements; (a) the coefficient of friction between said work rolls and said back-up rolls is in the range of 0.04 to 0.1, (b) the viscosity is not larger than 80 Cst. at 40.degree. C., (c) mineral oil and synthetic ester not less than 5% are contained as base oil, (d) a fatty acid in the range of 0.03 to 0.5% is contained as an oiliness enhancer, (e) an extreme pressure additive not less than 0.1% is contained, and preferably, (f) a surface active agent not larger than 0.5% is contained as emulsifier.
