    • A bar speed changing device (48) comprising a pair of upper rollers (55, 55′) and a pair of lower rollers (59, 59′). Said device receives a bar section with the rollers (55, 55′, 59, 59′) in the open position and rotating at a given speed. Upon leaving the device (48) said sections are fed into axially arranged peripheral seats (58) of rotating drum channels. Control devices calculate the speed at which the bar section must be released, upon completion of the braking action, according to the position that said section must occupy in one of said seats and on the basis of the bar-seat friction coefficient. When the rollers (55, 55′, 59, 59′) receive the bar, they turn at the calculated release speed. At a predefined moment, such to enable braking in the correct space and time, the four rollers close on the section and exert the braking action, exploiting the dynamic friction between the roller-section.

    • In a transmission for driving the rolls of a rolling line having a number of rolling stands disposed one after another, a respective planetary transmission stage is provided at several output shaft (20) and forms the output rotational speed from a basic rotational speed and an additional rotational speed. The gear wheels (2,23) of the gear wheel transmission trains transmitting the basic and additional rotational speeds are mounted on stationary bearing bushes (3, 26) which project into the hub regions of the gear wheels (2, 23) and are secured in bores or on flange facings of the load-bearing walls (5, 6) of the transmission housing (1). Only one of the gear wheel transmision trains is disposed between the load-bearing walls of the transmision housing, while the other is disposed on the outside stands. This permits the transmission to be of lighter construction and allows greater gear ratios in the gear wheel transmission trains and a smaller distance between the output shafts (20).

    • A mill and a method for rolling flat workpieces of great width such as metallic strip, plates and the like. The mill comprises upper and lower housing beams joined at their ends by pairs of channels defining windows in which chocks are slidably mounted. Upper and lower work rolls are mounted in the chocks to maintain the work rolls in the vertical plane of symmetry of the mill. Each work roll is provided with a plurality of pressure transmitting elements evenly spaced therealong and contacting a part of the periphery of the work roll. The set of pressure transmitting elements for the upper work roll is operatively affixed to the upper housing beam and the set of pressure transmitting elements for the lower work roll is operatively affixed to the lower housing beam. The pressure transmitting elements of at least one of the sets are each provided with a fluid pressure actuator by which the pressure exerted by that pressure transmitting element on its respective work roll can be rapidly increased or decreased. In the rolling procedure, the pressure transmitting elements are employed to absorb the roll separating force and produce a flat product. Those pressure transmitting elements provided with a fluid pressure actuator are constantly adjusted to maintain a constant rate of percentage of reduction of thickness of the workpiece across its width.
