    • The invention concerns a method for mounting a wheel on an axle housing in the form of an axle tube (1) for vehicles, in particular commercial vehicles, whereby the wheel is fixed e.g. with wheel bolts to a wheel hub, pivoting on the axle stub (2) of the axle tube (1) and the axle stub (2) is clamped on to an end section (3) of the axle tube (1) as a separate component. For simplicity of manufacture and assembly combined with functional durability it is proposed that the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) is cylindrical on the inside and has at least one longitudinal slit (4), that the axle stub (2) fits into the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) with an externally corresponding cylindrical connecting section (5) and that the end section (3) of the axle tube (1) is radially clamped on to the connecting section (5) of the axle stub (2) by means of at least one longitudinally continuously split clamping ring (6) positioned on the end section (3) of the axle tube (1).

    • This invention relates to an improved vehicle wheel idle station tooling apparatus. The vehicle wheel idle station tooling apparatus includes a center pilot and at least one rim block. The center pilot is adapted to be secured to a component of the vehicle wheel idle station tooling apparatus and defines an outer diameter which is slightly less than an inner diameter defined by a pilot hole of a vehicle wheel so as to pilot the vehicle wheel on the center pilot. The rim block is adapted to be secured to a component of the vehicle wheel idle station tooling apparatus and includes a surface which is operative to engage an outer surface of a flange of the vehicle wheel so as to support the vehicle wheel thereon. At least one of the center pilot and the rim block is releasably secured to the component by a quick release pin which enables said at least one of said center pilot and said rim block to be removed and replaced with a different sized component by a manual hand-operated manipulation of the quick release pin without resort to the utilization of a tool.

    • A vehicle wheel with a roll-formed rim has an interior rim section and axially spaced first and second beadseat sections. A disc is attached at its skirt flange to the first beadseat section. The first beadseat section has radially outward and radially inward surfaces, both angled radially outward from the wheel axis for example at a fifteen degree angle. A roll-formed groove is formed in the radially inward surface of the first beadseat section, the groove having an inwardly facing cylindrical first surface. The skirt flange has an outwardly facing cylindrical first surface, which engages and is press-fit with the groove cylindrical first surface. The skirt flange and rim are then welded. The groove has a second frusto-conical surface adjacent the groove cylindrical surface. The skirt flange may have a second frusto-conical surface to mate with the groove second frusto-conical surface. The skirt flange may have a third frusto-conical surface to mate with the radially inward surface of the first beadseat section.

    • An improved method is disclosed for producing a wheel rim for use in a vehicle wheel. The method includes the steps of: (a) providing a flat sheet of material; (b) forming the flat sheet into a hoop having a first predetermined axial length; (c) expanding the hoop to a predetermined inner hoop diameter; (d) flow spinning the hoop to produce a wheel rim preform having a second predetermined axial length greater than the first predetermined axial length, the wheel rim preform including opposed axial ends and a thinned axially extending intermediate portion located between the axial ends; (e) subsequent to step (d), flaring at least one axial end of the wheel rim preform; and (f) subsequent to step (e), subjecting the wheel rim preform to a series of roll forming operations to produce a finished wheel rim having at least one tire bead seat retaining flange, at least one tire bead seat surface, and a generally axially extending well.

    • A multi-piece, non-take-apart vehicle wheel disc and rim assembly and method of making the same. The wheel rim has a disc mounting flange extending radially inwardly of the rim which radially overlaps the disc. The disc and rim are each finish formed prior to assembly and each have a set of assembly-mounting holes extending parallel to the wheel axis which are generally registered in initial assembly. One assembly hole set is preformed slightly larger in diameter that the other. The rim is fixture on an assembly apparatus to orient the average axis of the rim bead seats on a predetermined first axis of the apparatus. Then the disc is placed loosely on the rim with the sets of disc and rim assembly holes generally registered. Then the disc is precision located relative to the rim by a locating mechanism to align the axes of the disc bolt holes and/or center pilot opening on a predetermined second axis of the apparatus by lateral bodily shifting of the disc radially relative to the rim to accomplish such alignment as necessary. Assembly fasteners are inserted in the registering assembly holes, and then, while so fixtured and located, the disc and rim are permanently fixed together by permanently fixing the fasteners in a non-take-apart mode.
