    • A machine parts protecting system for protecting those parts of a machine that may be in close proximity to high temperature flames. This system is for a machine used for processing workpieces and has a plurality of workpiece holding members which are indexed in a stop-and-go fashion through a number of operating stations. The protecting system includes a photo-detector to detect that a workpiece is not being held by one of the workpiece holding members and to send a first signal to a memory circuit which retains that information until a predetermined time when the empty workpiece holding member arrives at an operating station with high temperature flames. At that time the memory circuit initiates a second signal opening a solenoid valve, thereby permitting an air jet to blow the high temperature flames away from the empty workpiece holding member.

    • An apparatus is described for controlling the sequences of operations executed at the various work stations. At each work station there is provided detecting means arranged for detecting the correct completion of an operation, e.g. the correct positioning of a part in a support such as a case for making a cartridge, and generating a fault signal when the operation is not correctly completed. The fault signal is written into shift register means and shifted in response to a timed control signal, the successive states of this shift register means being compared with a reference signal representing the number of steps along the path between that work station and the next. When the state of the shift register means is coincident with the reference signal, an inhibit signal is produced for inhibiting the operation at at least one next work station.

    • An automatic punch press and monitoring system. The monitoring system includes a piezoelectric accelerometer mounted within the stationary die shoe of the punch press, and electronic circuitry including a variable gain amplifier, a detector, an integrator, and a comparator. The monitoring system is manually placed in a "LEARN" mode whereupon the signal produced by the accelerometer during normal operation of the punch press is amplified, detected, and integrated over the time period of one stroke to produce a test function. The gain of the amplifier is automatically adjusted during successive normal strokes of the punch press until the test function is equal to an arbitrary set point, thereby establishing a reference function. The monitoring system is then automatically placed in an "AUTO CONTROL" mode whereupon on each succeeding stroke, with the gain of the amplifier fixed, the test function produced is compared with the reference function. If the test function is above a first high limit level corresponding to a percentage of the reference function and below a second high limit level corresponding to a second percentage of the reference function a check alarm is activated. If the test function is above the second high limit level or below a low limit level corresponding to a third percentage of the reference function the punch press is shut down.

    • An improved machine tool includes a tailstock having a center assembly which is movable between operating and retracted positions by a piston and cylinder assembly. When the center assembly is in the operating position, a main axis of the center assembly is aligned with the axis of rotation of a workpiece. In the retracted position, the center assembly is offset to one side of the workpiece. When the center assembly is in the operating position, a tailstock motor is activated to press the center assembly against the outer end of the workpiece to thereby support the workpiece in a known manner. A control system coordinates movement of the center assembly with movement of a turret to avoid interference between the tailstock and tools mounted on the turret.
