    • In a power source apparatus for wire electric discharge machining capable of applying voltages of both of positive and opposite polarities to a gap between a wire electrode (1a) and a workpiece (2), there is provided a controller (14) for applying a first voltage pulse to the gap for predetermined time T1 and then applying a second voltage pulse of a polarity opposite to the first voltage pulse for predetermined time T2a necessary for the gap voltage to become a predetermined voltage lower than or equal to a voltage Va capable of starting an electric discharge after a lapse of predetermined time t set for prevention of breakage of a switch. The apparatus is used in machining for performing at least two machining operations selected from machining in machining liquid, machining in mist and machining in gas. Wire electric discharge machining with high reliability suitable for high-accurate machining can be implemented.

    • In wire electric discharge machining in which electric discharge energy is supplied between a wire electrode (1a) and a workpiece (2) by a machining electric power supply means (16) so as to machine the workpiece (2) when the wire electrode (1a) and the workpiece (2) are relatively traveled with each other by a positioning means, there are provided a first process in which rough machining is conducted in a working solution (4a) and a second process in which finish-machining is conducted in gas (7) such as air, oxygen, nitrogen or inert gas, and the positioning means is controlled by a control means (17) so that a relative traveling speed of the wire electrode (1a) with the workpiece (2) in the second process can be set at a constant rate not lower than a predetermined rate at which a short circuit can not continue between the electrodes for a predetermined period of time and more which has been previously set according to a required specification. It is possible to realize a high accuracy and quality of wire electric discharge machining and also it is possible to realize an enhancement of productivity.

    • A method for machining materials difficult to cut by EDM conventional processes and consisting in providing contamination of the machining or dielectric fluid used in the course of electrical discharge machining with particles of a metal or metallic alloy of low vaporization temperature selected, for example, from the group consisting of zinc, cadmium, tin, lead, antimony and bismuth. The contamination particles are obtained directly from a surface coating placed directly on the electrode tool or from an additional piece of metal or metallic alloy which is electro-eroded at the same time as a cut is effected by the electrode tool in an electrode workpiece, and the contaminated fluid is circulated in the machining zone between the electrodes, the contaminated fluid facilitating the triggering of the electrical discharges in the machining zone and providing an increase of the machining rate, or material removal rate.
