    • An impulse generator for the spark erosive cutting of workpieces by electrodes of a liquid or solid medium, consists of a control circuit and a principal circuit. The control circuit contains: the control circuit contains an oscillator, reduction stages for the generation of elements which belong to the impulse signal, a counter for the addressing of impulse signal, a memory of a feedback circuit which detects the electrical conditions in the working gap, and a ROM with programmed memory locations, which are addressed by the counter according to the addresses of the impulse elements and by memory according to the addresses of the electrical conditions in the working gap, whereby the contents of the memory locations generate an output signal or no output signal. The principal circuit contains two electronic switches for the generation of a working impulse in the working gap when an output signal is present, and a control circuit which inhibits only one of two electronic counters.

The apparatus is used in machining for performing at least two machining operations selected from machining in machining liquid, machining in mist and machining in gas.     • In wire electric discharge machining in which electric discharge energy is supplied between a wire electrode (1a) and a workpiece (2) by a machining electric power supply means (16) so as to machine the workpiece (2) when the wire electrode (1a) and the workpiece (2) are relatively traveled with each other by a positioning means, there are provided a first process in which rough machining is conducted in a working solution (4a) and a second process in which finish-machining is conducted in gas (7) such as air, oxygen, nitrogen or inert gas, and the positioning means is controlled by a control means (17) so that a relative traveling speed of the wire electrode (1a) with the workpiece (2) in the second process can be set at a constant rate not lower than a predetermined rate at which a short circuit can not continue between the electrodes for a predetermined period of time and more which has been previously set according to a required specification. It is possible to realize a high accuracy and quality of wire electric discharge machining and also it is possible to realize an enhancement of productivity.
