    • The brake actuator assembly of this invention significantly reduces accumulation of road debris, reduces the weight of the push rod and yoke assembly and friction between the mating parts. The brake actuator includes a housing defining a chamber having an opening through the end wall, a push rod and yoke assembly reciprocally mounted within the housing chamber and a shield located within the housing closely receiving the exterior surface of the push rod and yoke assembly which has a smooth substantially continuous external surface. In the preferred embodiment, the yoke is secured to the push rod within the housing chamber, surrounding the push rod having an elliptical exterior surface which sheds accumulation of road debris.

    • A brake condition monitoring system includes a central control receiving signals from each of the several brake actuators mounted on a vehicle. The control receives all of the signals, and sends a single signal to a display in the cab of the vehicle indicative of which of the brake actuators may be evidencing a malfunction. The signals from each brake actuators are unique such that the control can determine which brake actuator each signal is from. The control is also capable of monitoring conditions other than movement of a push rod. The control can ensure that each of the parking brakes have been fully released, the system can monitor the number of actuations for each of the brake actuators, the system can monitor whether a particular brake has been actuated for a long period of time and the system can act as a self check for each of the sensors associated with the brake actuators by monitoring which brake actuators are actuated to ensure that each of the brake actuators sends a signal indicative of an actuation. The invention further anticipates other conditions may be controlled or sensed. In further aspects of this invention, magnets associated with the push rod are mounted within a flexible sleeve mounted on the push rod. Flexible magnets are used. Switches are mounted in the housing of the brake actuators to monitor movement from the magnets. Several embodiments of systems for incorporating the unique controls into a vehicle are disclosed. The control may be mounted within the cab and associated with the display, or it may be mounted onto the body of the vehicle. In either embodiment, it is preferred that only two signal feed lines lead forwardly to the cab.

    • A diaphragm for spring brake actuators includes an aperture that receives a threaded securement member such that the diaphragm is directly fixed to a push rod. In this way, misalignment between the push rod and the diaphragm is eliminated. To overcome any leakage through the aperture the diaphragm is formed with sealing beads compressed by the securement member to achieve a seal. Preferably, diaphragm plates are received on each side of the diaphragm, and the sealing beads are compressed by the securement member to achieve a seal between the securement member and the diaphragm plates. An adequate seal is thus achieved, while still allowing the direct connection of the diaphragm to the push rod by a threaded connecting member. The diaphragm plate on the power spring side of the diaphragm extends upwardly into a recess in the power spring plate, and is in facial contact in an axial direction with a surface of the power spring plate when the spring is actuated. At the same time, there is a clearance when the spring is compressed, such that misalignment of the push rod due to manufacturing tolerances is also eliminated. This contact resists misalignment between the power spring plate and the diaphragm plate, and consequently the diaphragm. There is some small radial clearance between the outer periphery of the diaphragm plate and the power spring plate such that the two members are "free floating" and may have some small amount of relative adjustment.

    • A brake system for a tractor unit of a tractor-trailer vehicle which includes a ratio and proportioning apparatus responsive to trailer attached and trailer detached conditions. The proportioning apparatus communicates with a conduit conveying supply pressure to a trailer carried brake system and effects a reduction of the pressure applied to the rear brake actuators when a trailer is not attached. The proportioning function of the ratio and proportioning apparatus is sensitive to, and modified by, reservoir pressure and can be overridden by the vehicle operator regardless of the vehicle operating mode. The preferred brake system also includes a front dual mode relay valve which is operative to reduce the pressure applied to the front brake actuators, relative to that applied to the rear brake actuators, when a trailer is attached to the tractor.
