    • A braking system is provided that enables application and release of a parking brake with fluid control and that also maintains application of the brake during a loss of fluid pressure—all without using springs and using only a single fluid control conduit. The brake actuator for the system includes a housing defining service and parking chambers. A pushrod in the parking chamber is configured for movement with a diaphragm in the chamber. The parking brake is applied by introducing fluid on one side of the diaphragm. A clutch surrounds the pushrod and includes a tooth configured to engage corresponding teeth on the pushrod to hold the position of the pushrod even during a loss of fluid pressure. The clutch is rotated under fluid control to move the clutch tooth into and out of alignment with the teeth on the pushrod to hold and release the parking brake.

According to an embodiment, a drum brake assembly comprises a mounting flange having an abutment; a backing plate secured to the mounting flange, the backing plate having a pair of brake shoes supported thereon; and an electric actuator unit for actuating the drum brake assembly to selectively move the brake shoes between a braking and a non-braking position, the electric actuator unit including a motor, a gear-set operatively coupled to be driven by the motor, a spindle nut operatively coupled to be rotationally driven by the gear-set, a pull rod operatively coupled to be translatorily driven by the spindle nut, and a brake shoe actuation link assembly operatively coupled to be actuated by the pull rod to thereby move the brake shoes between the braking and non-braking positions, the pull rod being operatively coupled to the brake shoe actuation link assembly by a link, the link having a first end pivotally connected to the pull rod and a second end pivotally connected to a second member of the brake shoe actuation link assembly.

    • A braking apparatus and method are provided for applying a braking force to the inboard and outboard sides of a brake rotor, through the use of a pair of pistons disposed in a back-to-back relationship in a cylinder bore of a housing, and defining a space between them in the cylinder bore for receipt of a pressurized fluid. The rotor is rotatable about a rotor axis, and the cylinder bore defines a bore axis extending parallel to the rotor axis. A first piston of the pair of pistons is slidably disposed in the cylinder bore for movement in a first direction along the bore axis toward the inboard side of the rotor for applying a braking force to the inboard side of the rotor, and the second piston of the pair of pistons is slidably disposed in the cylinder bore for movement in a second direction opposite the first direction along the bore axis for applying a braking force to the outboard side of the rotor. A movable bridge element is slidingly attached to the housing for transmitting a braking force from the second piston to the outboard side of the rotor.
