    • A control system maintains a predetermined volumetric ratio between fine-particle fuel and a gasification agent which are fed separately into a reactor wherein the fuel is gasified under pressure. The control system includes a first measuring means responsive to the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by the fine-particle fuel in a fuel-feed line for producing a fuel-feed signal corresponding to the volumetric amount of fuel conducted by the line. A vehicle gas-feed signal is produced by a second measuring means in response to the volumetric amount of vehicle gas conducted by a line into the fuel-feed line for admixture with the fuel therein. Computing means is responsive to the fuel-feed signal and the vehicle gas-feed signal to produce a control signal according the expression:U.sub.1 . (U.sub.2 - U.sub.v)for all values of U.sub.2 greater than U.sub.v where U.sub.1 corresponds to the reciprocal of the fuel-feed signal, U.sub.2 corresponds to the vehicle gas-feed signal and U.sub.v is a predetermined comparison signal constant. Control valves respond to the control signal to vary the volumetric amount of fuel and gasification agent introduced into the reactor.

    • Coke is dry cooled in a shaft-like cooler by gases conveyed through the coke. The cooler comprises a top antechamber below a charging opening, a cooling chamber under the antechamber and having a gas inlet and a coke outlet at the bottom end. Between the antechamber and the cooling chamber, there is a cylindrical wall having a gas inlet. The cooling chamber is divided by radial walls which abut a central masonry core and divide the chamber into three shaft-like chambers to insure uniform descending of the coke. A prop is placed at the center of each component shaft for deflecting the descending coke from a central region. Cooling gas is supplied through a pipe having a downwardly-directed opening below a central masonry core. Additional cooling gas is supplied by an annular chamber surrounding a cone at a coke outlet of the cooling chamber.

    • Liquid slag passes from an overflow in a pressure vessel into an underlying collecting vessel where the liquid slag is transformed into solid granular material by quenching in a liquid coolant. A desired coolant level is maintained within the collecting vessel by control valves under a pressure above atmospheric pressure. Two slide valves in the bottom of the collecting vessel are opened to discharge the granular material after accumulating to a predetermined measured level which is below the liquid coolant in the collecting vessel. A discharge vessel, beneath the collecting vessel, receives the discharged granular material. The discharge vessel is filled with a liquid coolant under either atmospheric pressure or under the same elevated pressure as the pressure within the collecting vessel. When the pressure in the discharge vessel is at atmospheric pressure, two slide valves in the bottom of the discharge vessel are opened to discharge the solid granular material into an underlying container which includes a scraper conveyor to transport the solid granular material.

    • A shaft cooler for dry quenching of coke includes an inner masonry ring that is an independent structure suspended on the top edge of the outer masonry of the shaft cooler. The weight of the inner masonry ring is carried by stays which bear on the top edge of the outer masonry. The tubular stays are disposed in one embodiment inside the masonry ring and in another embodiment outside the masonry ring. The tubular stays are connected to ring mains for conducting a coolant medium. When the tubular stays are disposed outside the masonry ring, parallel tubes are interconnected along their entire length by webs to form a closed steel ring. Ring tubes are welded to the top and bottom ends to serve as a heat exchanger and are connected to the evaporator section of a waste-heat boiler of the shaft cooler. Flue-gas passages are formed at the bottom edge of the masonry ring by radially, spaced-apart webs.

    • Disclosed is an apparatus including a probe adapted for removal through an aperture in the side wall of a high pressure chamber. The probe is supported at one end of a rod that is coaxially received within a sleeve. A plate at the free end of the rod forms a sealed connection between the rod and the sleeve. The sleeve extends within a tube attached at one end to the high pressure chamber in an enclosing relation with the aperture therein. The tube is divided along its length and secured by flanges to a valve used to selectively block the flow of media from the high pressure chamber after the sleeve is withdrawn along the tube beyond the valve. Screw threads on the external surface of the sleeve mate with internal screw threads formed in a screw head that is supported by the end of the tube to displace the sleeve therealong. A passageway in the screw head communicates with a bore therein for discharging pressurized gas into the interior of the tube and thereby prevents the flow of medium from the high pressure chamber during axial movement of the sleeve until the valve is closed.
