    • A novel waterborne cultivator, which provides the benefits of known systems for culture of photosynthetic micro-organisms in a novel configuration, incorporating a simplified, two-phase rotary mixing and gas injection system, the two phases being liquid and gas (CO2). The mixing system provides optimum growth conditions through increased turbulent vertical mixing and increased levels of dissolved CO2 throughout the cultivator via injection of flue gas or other CO2-bearing gas stream. The system thus provides efficient capture and sequestration or reuse of CO2 while producing valuable biomass for food, feed, and fuel use. The waterborne configuration provides further benefits of passive temperature control and automatic leveling for consistent culture depth. Additional benefit is provided by an enclosed design which reduces contamination and evaporative loss by isolating the photosynthetic culture from the outside environment. The simplified and well-integrated design of the cultivator and mixing system greatly reduces capital and operating costs compared to previously known systems.

    • A system and method for applying motion blur to an application window. Motion blur may be applied to pixel in a window by calculating a velocity vector for each pixel in the window with reference to velocity vectors calculated for each corner of the window. Motion blur may be implemented by placing a number of blur samples in a frame along the pixel velocity vector according to the size of the pixel vector, or by directionally downsampling then re-upsampling the content of the window. For a frame having multiple windows, the motion blur for each window may be determined independent of the motion of other windows or as a composite for windows moving together. According to an embodiment, for each pixel in the frame, the associated application window may be identified and the pixel blurred with reference to the corner velocities of the associated application window.

    • This invention provides a segmented annular seal (10) the sealing leakage gaps between relatively movable components 14,16 between high and low pressure regions in a gas turbine engine, for example for sealing an engine shaft 16. The seal comprises an annular array of circumferentially spaced and radially movable arcuate seal segments (12) which extend in a continuous end to end relationship in annular housing (14) and project radially from the housing for effecting a seal against an engine shaft (16), rotor or the like. The segments (12) are located in a channel (22) in the housing (14) sized such that the segments (12) are able to follow radial movements of the shaft (16). In order to reduce an axial loading on the segments (12) that ends to cause them to seize a pressure balance region (30) vented to the upstream pressure region is formed on the downstream side of the segments (12). A second pressure balance region (42) vented to the downstream pressure region may be formed on the upstream side of the segments (12) to relieve a twisting moment acting on the segments.

    • Disclosed herein is a laser welding system having a travel path to carry a first blank and a second blank. An upstream clamp assembly and a downstream clamp assembly are positioned on the travel path and each of the upstream and downstream clamp assemblies are movable to an open position to allow the first blank to pass through the upstream clamp assembly to a first location within the downstream clamp assembly. A laser welding source is directed at a weld location on the travel path between the upstream and downstream clamp assemblies. At least one locating means is operable to locate the first weld edge adjacent the weld location. A first displacement means displaces the first weld edge against the locating means. The downstream clamp assembly is movable from the open position to a closed clamped position to clamp the first blank with the first weld edge adjacent the weld location. The locating means is operable to be withdrawn from the travel path. The upstream clamp assembly is movable from the open position to an intermediate position, which is selected to guide the second blank to pass through the upstream clamp assembly in a substantially coplanar relationship with the first blank so that the second weld edge makes contact with, but not past, the first weld edge. A second displacement means displaces the second blank to a location adjacent the weld location where the second weld edge abuts the first weld edge. The upstream clamp assembly is movable from the intermediate position to a closed clamped position to clamp the second blank and the the laser welding source is operable to fuse the first and second weld edges blanks together.

    • A brush seal designed for use between regions of high pressure differential and in an environment in which there is disturbed flow has a bristle pack sub-divided into a plurality of bristle pack regions with a leaky diaphragm between each region. The brush seal may comprise an assembly of individual seals with diaphragms between them or a single bristle pack which is sub-divided by at least one internal diaphragm. The diaphragms are preferably compliant and designed to allow a predetermined leakage flow between bristle regions. The leakage flow has several functions: it causes the pressure differential across the whole seal assembly to be more evenly distributed, and by providing an amount of flow in each pack this acts to calm the bristles thus helping to ensure each bristle region effectively contributes to the seal performance.
