    • A seal assembly is provided for a rotary machine wherein the rotary machine comprises a rotor and a casing. The rotor comprises a generally longitudinally-extending axis. The casing is generally coaxially aligned with the axis. The casing circumferentially surrounds, is radially spaced apart from the rotor, and comprises an inner circumferential channel generally coaxially aligned with the rotor. The seal assembly comprises a plurality of seal carrier segments fixedly disposed in a circumferential array in the inner circumferential channel. Each of the seal carrier segments comprises a seal carrier channel. At least one of the seal carrier segments comprises at least one fluid inlet disposed therein. In addition, the seal assembly comprises a (meaning at least one) seal disposed in the seal carrier channel and is movable between radially inward and radially outward positions upon introduction of fluid medium in the fluid inlet.

    • A plurality of brush seal segments are disposed in a groove of a component fixed against rotation and project into sealing relation with a rotating component. The brush seal segments are each comprised of a pair of plates having a plurality of brush bristles therebetween, the plates and bristles being secured along the outer arcuate face of the segments by a weld bead. The opposite ends of the bristles form the seal with the rotary component. Each brush seal segments is disposed in a groove with generous clearance between a hook on the segment and a flange on the fixed component. A spring between the fixed component and arcuate outer face of the brush seal segment biases the segment in a radial direction. The end of the spring has a pair of tabs spaced axially from one another for reception in a pair of axially spaced recesses to retain the spring against circumferential movement while simultaneously maintaining the integrity of the weld joint without loss of securement of the bristles.

    • A gas turbine seal structure provided between end portions of a moving blade platform and a stationary blade inside shroud. The sealing performance of the seal structure is improved by increasing the resistance to the flow of air. A seal plate (21, 31) is mounted to an end portion of a platform (2, 2′) of the moving blade (1) and a seal portion is formed by seal fins (22, 32) and a honeycomb seal (16, 17) disposed on a lower surface of an end portion (12a, 12b) of an inside shroud (12) of a stationary blade (11). Sealing air from the stationary blade (11) produces a high temperature in a cavity (14) and flows into a space (18, 19), and also air leaking from the cooling air of the moving blade (1) is able to escape into a high temperature combustion gas passage through a seal portion. However, since the seal plate has three seal fins (22, 32) that are inclined in a direction so as to oppose the air flow, air resistance is increased and the flow of air into the combustion gas passage is prevented.

    • A brush seal assembly for a coal pulverizer includes multiple identical assembly segments. Each assembly segment comprises an arcuate brush assembly, a pair of clamping block assemblies and a pair of mounting bolts. The brush assembly includes a brush and an adjusting segment having a pair of elliptical openings. A radially inner end of the brush contacts the pulverizer yoke and a radially outer end is connected to the adjusting segment. Each clamping block assembly includes a clamping block, having a circular opening, a threaded rod, and a pair of jam nuts, the rod extending radially from an inner end mounted to the clamping block through the first jam nut, a hole in the adjusting segment, and the second jam nut. Each mounting bolt has a threaded shaft which extends longitudinally upward from the bolt head, through the circular opening of one of the clamping blocks and one of the elliptical openings of the adjusting segment, to a distal end portion which engages an opening of the pulverizer seal housing.
