    • A shift lever support mechanism for a transmission comprises a shift lever having a partly spherical pivot body and a distal end extending from the partly spherical pivot body for engagement with a gear shifting actuator shaft of the transmission, a retainer member adapted to be mounted on the transmission casing and having a bore accommodating the spherical pivot body therein, the retainer member including a partly spherical seat supporting the partly spherical pivot body, the retainer member having a central opening through which the distal end extends, resilient means disposed in the bore in the retainer member for normally urging the partly spherical pivot body against the partly spherical seat, and a boot mounted on the shift lever and the retainer member and defining a space therein communicating with the bore in the retainer member. The retainer member has an escape passage defined in a wall thereof adjacent to the partly spherical seat for communication between the space and the interior of the transmission casing. With this arrangement, the space in the boot and the interior of the transmission casing are equally pressurized through the escape passage. No oil is filled in the boot space and will not leak out of an air vent in the boot.

    • A solid-state imaging device comprises a number of photodiodes arrayed in horizontal rows and vertical columns, a first output circuit for sequentially reading out signal charges from those photodiodes which are arrayed on odd-numbered horizontal rows, a second output circuit for sequentially reading out signal charges from the photodiodes arrayed on the even-numbered horizontal rows, a synchronizing pulse generator for synchronizing operation of the first and second output circuits, a first subtracting circuit for determining the difference between the output signals of the first and second output circuits in odd-numbered field, and a second subtracting circuit for determining the difference between the output signals of the first and second output circuits in even-numbered field. The outputs of the first and second subtracting circuit are alternately extracted in synchronism with the synchronizing pulse produced by the synchronizing pulse generator. The solid-state imaging device is made immune to the smear phenomenon. The invention can be advantageously applied to the solid-state imaging device of CCD type as well as MOS type.

    • An optical fiber submarine cable, which is provided with at least one coated optical fiber, a power supplying, pressure resisting layer of a pipe-like configuration, a tension resisting wire layer formed of a conductive material of relatively low conductivity and disposed in close contact with the power supplying, pressure resisting layer of the pipe-like configuration, and an insulator layer disposed around the tension resisting wire layer. The power supplying, pressure resisting layer is formed as at least one inner layer and an outer layer. The inner layer is formed as a single layer or composite layers by forming a tape-like good conductor material into a pipe-like configuration with its joint made a mere butt, or by assembling together a plurality of pressure resisting material segments equally divided in the circumference direction for at least one layer of the inner layer and having housed the above-mentioned at least one coated optical fiber in an optical fiber housing space defined centrally of the inner layer. The outer layer is formed by winding a metal tape on the inner layer.
