    • A device for treating printing plates with a fluid. A flooded trough has a bottom, two lateral boundary walls and containment blades, one blade located on each of the inlet and outlet sides of the trough. The bottom carries a plate guide surrounded by a rectangular overflow channel integral with the bottom. Feed branches are releasably inserted into holder pipes leading from the overflow channel to a feed line having a T-branch. The feed line is connected via a pump to a tank, the latter used as a stock vessel for the fluid. The holder pipes are taken through an inclined bottom of a collecting trough which surrounds the flooded trough, and are rigidly joined to the inclined bottom. Baffles are provided in the overflow channel above the inlet openings of the feed branches. The fluid flows into the flooded trough through the feed line, and flows out by overflow into the collecting trough, then to the stock vessel, and thereafter is recirculated by the pump.

    • A lithographic plate processor (10) includes developer apparatus (12) and chemical distribution apparatus (14, 15). The developer apparatus (12) insures a uniform spreading of the developer over the exposed surface of a lithographic plate traveling through the processor. The developer apparatus (12) includes a pair of spreading members (40, 42) which are pivotally connected to each other by a parallel linkage (44). The parallel linkage (44) in turn is pivotally mounted to a subframe (46). A mechanism is provided for rotating a shaft (94) which drives a linkage to create an oscillating motion in the spreading members (40, 42) to uniformly spread the developer over the surface of the lithographic plate. The chemical distribution apparatus (14, 15) includes a tank (32) in which an agitating bar (38) is provided. The tank is mounted for oscillation and has a plurality of apertures (138) formed in the front wall (130) thereof to distribute chemical from within the tank to a lithographic plate below. The agitating bar (38) acts to agitate the chemical and a portion of the bar may be raised off the interior surface of the tank to enhance the agitation. The top portion of the tank may also be sloped towards the front wall (130) so that the agitator bar (38) further acts to increase the pressure driving the chemical through the apertures (138).

    • This invention relates to an improvement in a device for uniformly pressing on and releasing the pressure from, particularly oscillating, rub-out bars in an apparatus for developing printing plates including transport rolls and, if appropriate, squeezing rolls arranged in pairs, particularly in a horizontal position, with a bearing at each end of each upper roll, and means whereby each bearing and upper roll may be raised and lowered with respect to each lower roll, the improvement comprising pivotal angle lever means, equipped with weight means, and having a lower arm with a pressure roll connected to the end thereof, the pressure roll being adapted to exert pressure on a rub-out bar in the lowered position of each upper roll, and lifting means for the angle lever means comprising bearing means adapted to seat on shaft means of the upper rolls, and connecting means between the bearing means and an upper arm of the pivotal angle lever means.

    • A processor for photopolymerizable films is described. In this processor, film is fed, image up, in a straight through path by a series of soft rubber covered transport rollers first into a development section, then to a rinse section, and finally to a dryer section. In the developer section, developer is delivered through spray pipes which maintain a curtain of developer cascading over the top rolls at both the entrance and exit of the developer section. The film is thus maintained flooded in a precisely controlled, well defined surface region such that the time in which the film undergoes development may be accurately controlled by varying film speed. The film is then rinsed in the rinse section by a high impact spray system and then dried.

    • A chemical dispensing system having its most important use in dispensing flowable developing and finishing chemicals upon exposed lithographic printing plates comprises a supply container for each of the chemicals positioned immediately above the dispensing station therefor, each supply container containing continuously moving stirring means for keeping the chemical continuously in motion to homogenize the same. A number of flexible, laterally spaced dispensing tubes extend downwardly from each supply container, and a flow control valve is provided for each tube which pinches it into a closed position at a point near the container so that the volume of liquid which remains in the tube between the tube pinch point and the container is relatively small. The pinch valve comprises a unique combination of adjusting screws, a pressure-applying member and a spring member to control the closing pressure on each dispensing tube and the limited degree to which the tube is released, to permit small accurately controlled amounts of chemical to be dispensed through the dispensing tube. The spring member, upon release of closing pressure on each tube springs out to shake loose and distribute any particles which have settled out in the tube, to avoid clogging and to homogenize the chemical involved when it flows through the valve.

    • A compact, simple, fully automatic table-top plate processor for developing offset plates which are inserted horizontally in the front and ejected horizontally from the rear using paired transport rollers and brush rollers training the plate at the exit and thus provides a finished press-ready or storable plate in one cycle. Top rollers fit into essentially vertical slots and have keyed bearings to prevent rotation. The roller drive motor is of such a speed as to provide the proper dwell time prior to the plate being brushed on both sides. The processor provides automatic developing of the plate in an essentially horizontal feed-through operation permitting use on the top of an existing table surface and requiring a minimum of space. By combining the gum into the developer solution the need for several stages (develop, rinse, condition, gum, etc.) is eliminated and this one step machine provides a unique compactness of design.

    • An automatic integrated processor which sequentially develops, washes and, if desired, applies gum to the exposed surface of an offset photolithographic plate in appropriately separated processing stages. The exposed surface of the plate is subjected to a linear, reciprocating rubbing action by plural sponges, which rubbing action produces results surprisingly similar to those produced by a manual rotary action. A fully assembled processor of this invention requires only that it be connected to a water supply, a source of power, and to a reservoir for used, waste fluids. A single electric motor is adapted (a) to drive plural pairs of coupled drive rolls, (b) to reciprocate the sponges in frictional contact with a generally horizontal offset plate and (c) to agitate angularly disposed containers for developer and gum. The translation of the rotary motion of the electric motor to linear reciprocation in mutually orthogonal planes is effected by direct rod-actuated drives with swivel rod-ends. The fully assembled processor may be transported through a standard 36" wide doorway, eliminating the drawbacks characteristic of machines which are to be assembled at the installation site.
