    • High-speed digital transmission can be achieved with existing phone lines and HDSL chipsets while retaining plain old telephone service (POTS) with full failsafe capability. One original digital data signal �4! at a rate of at least 352 kbps and typical 384 kbps and one POTS channel �10! digitized at 64 kbps are multiplexed by a HPCS card �6! of a signal provider �1!. The resulting digital signal is transported over a twisted based on the current technology. At a receiving end, the signal is demultiplexed and regenerated by a subscriber's HPCS card �7!. The subscriber's HPCS card is line-powered via the cable �2! to avoid dependence upon local power. The regenerated signals are transmitted over one POTS line �42! and one data line �8! to or within a remote premise. Both HPCS cards have bypass relays for the POTS line to ensure the subscriber's POTS access in the event of a local power outage or electronic failure.

    • A CPE such as an ISDN telephone subset or multimedia equipment includes an interface recognition unit that connects to the network interface and adapts itself to allow the CPE to be used with standard ISDN interfaces and an analog interface. The interface recognition unit includes an interface recognition switch (IRS) that performs two functions. First, the IRS protects the CPE from damage in those instances where a non-standard network interface is connected to the CPE. Second, for standard interfaces, it identifies the type of network interface and routes the incoming signals appropriately. Specifically, if the IRS detects a T interface, the incoming signals are switched directly to a T interface circuit for controlling and powering the higher functions of the CPE. If the IRS detects a U interface, incoming signals are automatically switched to a U interface circuit for controlling and powering the CPE. Alternatively, an interface adapter is provided that delivers the signals to circuitry relating to one of the standard interfaces and monitors the CPE to determine if it is operable. If the CPE is operable, the connection is maintained. If it is not operable, the interface adapter reroutes the signals to circuitry relating to a second one of the standard interfaces. The CPE is again monitored to determine if it is operable. If it is operable, the connection is maintained. If it is not operable the connection is blocked. The IRS and interface adapter can also detect if the network interface is an analog line and route the analog signals to an analog circuit provided in the ISDN CPE such that the ISDN CPE can function as an analog telephone.

    • A video telephone system which automatically switches during a normally operating communicating function to a minimum voice signal and a sub-power source when a master power source fails, and automatically switches back to the normally operating communicating function when the failure is remedied. The system includes first CODEC equipment which encodes a voice signal input from voice input-output equipment, and outputs various signals. Image pickup equipment receives an image signal and display equipment displays the image signal. The first CODEC equipment, the image pickup equipment and the display equipment function as voice and image signal encoding and decoding equipment. Second CODEC equipment encodes an input voice signal from the voice input-output equipment and outputs various signals. Line control equipment selectively outputs a signal input from the first or second CODECs for controlling switching of the first and second CODECs to the transmission path. Switching control equipment inputs a signal indicating the condition of the master power source, outputs a control signal in accordance with the input signal, and automatically controls voice communication by switching the first and second CODECs if the master power source fails.
