摘要： Fluid introduction is facilitated through the use of a port which extends entirely through a microfluidic substrate. Capillary forces can be used to retain the fluid within the port, and a series of samples or other fluids may be introduced through a single port by sequentially blowing the fluid out through the substrate and replacing the removed fluid with an alternate fluid, or by displacing the fluid in part with additional fluid. In another aspect, microfluidic substrates have channels which varying in cross-sectional dimension so that capillary action spreads a fluid only within a limited portion of the channel network. In yet another aspect, the introduction ports may include a multiplicity of very small channels leading from the port to a fluid channel, so as to filter out particles or other contaminants which might otherwise block the channel at the junction between the channel and the introduction port.

In one aspect, at least one at least partially covered fluidic channel is formed between a polymer layer and a polymer substrate as the polymer layer is deposited on the substrate. The partially covered fluidic channel is fabricated as a unitary polymer layer structure. In one implementation, a strong exposure process is applied to the polymer layer to create a deep cross-linked polymer region. A weak exposure process is applied to the polymer layer to create a shallow cross-linked polymer region.

The system includes a chemical reaction chamber having internal conduits through which a chemical reactant, such as a reaction gas, can be fed. The conduits for transporting fluids such as reactant, carrier gas and balance gas are in appropriate communication such that the amount of reactant going directly to a catalyst located in the reaction chamber can be optimally controlled. The system is highly useful for studying the kinetics of a chemical reaction.

摘要： High throughput screening of crystallization of a target material is accomplished by simultaneously introducing a solution of the target material into a plurality of chambers of a microfabricated fluidic device. The microfabricated fluidic device is then manipulated to vary the solution condition in the chambers, thereby simultaneously providing a large number of crystallization environments. Control over changed solution conditions may result from a variety of techniques, including but not limited to metering volumes of crystallizing agent into the chamber by volume exclusion, by entrapment of volumes of crystallizing agent determined by the dimensions of the microfabricated structure, or by cross-channel injection of sample and crystallizing agent into an array of junctions defined by intersecting orthogonal flow channels.
