    • The invention provides a three-stage surface acoustic wave filter of the ladder type wherein the resonance frequency difference &Dgr;f2 between the resonance frequency frs2 of a serial resonator in an intermediate stage and the resonance frequency frp2 of a parallel resonator therein is set at a value greater than the resonance frequency difference &Dgr;f1 (&Dgr;f3) between the resonance frequency frs1 (frs3) of a serial resonator in each of front and rear stages and the resonance frequency frp1 (frp3) of a parallel resonator therein, whereby the filter is given a widened pass band while reliably retaining satisfactory characteristics comparable to those of conventional surface acoustic wave filters of small pass band width. The desired filter exhibiting such performance is available within a shorter period of time and with reduced labor.

    • A variable optical attenuator with a first optical fiber has a mirror reflecting a light beam emitted from the end face of the first fiber; a second optical fiber arranged parallel to the first fiber, on which second fiber the emitted light beam reflected by the mirror is incident; and a position adjustment unit for adjusting the distance between the mirror and the end face of the first fiber. The structure includes a beam-converging lens between the end face and the mirror for converging the light beam emitted from the end face onto the mirror. The position adjustment unit includes a cylinder housing the mirror and having screws on the outer diameter portion thereof; and a box-shaped member housing the first fiber and the second fiber and having screws with which the cylinder is fitted onto the inner diameter portion. The distance between the mirror and the first fiber is adjustable by rotating the cylinder. An optical signal source for wavelength-multiplexed optical transmission systems includes multiple optical signal sources emitting light beams having different wavelengths; multiple variable optical attenuators arranged before multiple optical signal sources; and a photo-coupler composing light beams from the variable optical attenuators.

    • An optical disk drive for writing, erasing and reading data on a recording surface of an optical disk medium, includes an objective lens which irradiates the recording surface with rays, a magnetic circuit which generates an electromagnetic force for positioning the objective lens freely at a desired location, and a lens actuator including a support device for supporting the objective lens. The magnetic circuit includes two permanent magnets which are disposed so as to oppose poles having the same polarity to each other with the objective lens interposed therebetween. The magnetic circuit forms, in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the objective lens, a leakage magnetic field having an intensity which covers a range of external bias magnetic field intensities required for recording and erasing data on the recording surface of the optical disk medium.

    • There are provided a light source outputting a light having a first wavelength; a terminal unit including a directional coupling section having first and second optical waveguides, in which a first surface is formed on one end of the directional coupling section, and first and second optical input/output units respectively connected to the first and second optical waveguides are connected to the other end of the directional coupling section, and the light having the first wavelength is input from one end, and the light having the second wavelength is input and output from the first optical input/output unit; and an optical filter provided between a first end surface and the light source for passing the light having the first wavelength and for reflecting the light having the second wavelength. The light having the first wavelength is output from the second optical input/output unit, and the light having the second wavelength is input or output. The directional coupling section is designed to have the complete coupling length for the light having the first wavelength, and have a half length of the complete coupling length for the light having the second wavelength. Anoptical amplifier reduces the loss generated in the process from the pump light source to the rare-earth doped optical fiber so that the reduction of the gain of the rare-earth doped optical fiber can be prevented.
