    • Most contacts that are used in electrical switchgear are prone to erosion due to electrical arcs that are developed at the make and break of a circuit. Arcing is one of the major problems that can cause catastrophic failure of switchgear. In accordance with the invention, a discreet, controlled semiconductor switching assembly is provided within the conventional contact structure to reduce arcing. The semiconductor switching assembly includes a voltage-controlled gate that permits current flow through the contact only when desired. Current is allowed to flow only when the contact gap has been completely closed and is prevented from flowing immediately before the contacts are opened. Thus, there is very little current available to form an arc plasma, and, therefore, erosion of the contact surface is minimal, being mostly the product of mechanical wear.

    • An electrical switch for switching direct current in an inductively driven electromagnetic projectile launching system is provided with a rotor having a generally cylindrical conductive element with a first portion that includes a continuously conductive external surface. A second portion of the conductive element includes a pair of insulating members fixed at angularly spaced locations such that sections of the conductive elements and the insulating members alternate along the generally cylindrical surface of the elememt. One pair of angularly spaced retractable brush members extend radially inward toward and axially along the conductive surface of the first portion of the conductive element to make sliding electrical contact with the conductive element during the inductor charging phase of a launch sequence. A second pair of angularly spaced retractable brush members extend radially toward the segmented portion of the rotor conductive element and serve to commutate current from the switch to a pair of generally parallel projectile launching rails. A switch housing encircles the rotor and supports conductors which are used to electrically connect one brush of each pair to the launcher circuit. The other brushes are electrically shorted. Means is provided for moving the brush members into and out of contact with the rotor conductive element to achieve the desired switching function.

    • An arc suppression circuit for a switch carrying a load current includes a MOSFET having a drain connected to a first contact of the switch and a source connected to a second contact of the switch. A biasing capacitor is coupled at one end to the drain and at another end through a damping resistor to the gate, such that when the switch contacts are opened, the interrupted load current passes through the biasing capacitor to charge an inherent gate-to-source MOSFET capacitance for turning on the MOSFET and shunting the load current around the switch. A biasing resistor, connected between the gate and the source of the MOSFET, subsequently discharges the gate-to-source capacitance, turning off the MOSFET and terminating the shunted load current after the contacts of the switch have separated by a distance sufficient to preclude arcing. A zener diode, having its cathode connected to the gate of the MOSFET and its anode connected to the source of the MOSFET, quickly discharges the biasing capacitor when the switch contacts are reclosed.

    • A rotary, snap-action electrical switch suitable for immersion in the liquid dielectric of an electrical transformer. The switch includes a multi-position operating mechanism which latches each switch position while preventing contact rebound, absorbing all closing forces in the mechanism itself. A switch position indicator follows the movable contact, and not the actuating handle. A three-position embodiment of the switch rotates one end of a pivotable contact on a stationary contact, removing contact bias means from the current path. The remaining end is selectively engageable with either of two additional stationary contacts, as well as having a non-contact open circuit position. The pivotable contact is driven at a point intermediate its ends, to increase the torque arm and thus obtain the desired operating force with substantially reduced forces between the driving member and the contact carrier.
